It may not be maximum edge length, it's overall image size in data. You can probably take your 8.4 MB image and compress it in JPG to get it under the 3 MB limit, without shrinking your edge length of the image.

Given that anything on screen will be being viewed at 72dpi, you shouldn't need to post anything anywhere near that size... or am I missing something?

I`m struggling with this one. I`ve reduced to as little as one mb and still the image is rejected .
