Kodak says you can only get 16 rolls from a gallon of D-76. Do some testing to prove otherwise.

Xtol properly stored doesn't die suddenly. My last batch of Xtol was mixed Aug. 1, 2008 and the last 100ml worked fine in April, 2009. that old internet myth needs to die.

I don't think a 5 reel Patterson tank will hold enough D-76 1:1 for 5 rolls of film.

Bring a BIG changing bag or better, a Harrison changing tent. Loading film in the daytime is a huge advantage to make good use of your time.

Using D76 1:1 - you will get 25 + rolls. With a Paterson 5 reel tank you need 1500 ml of solution. 750 of stock D76 and 750 of water. 1 gallon of D76 is 3.8 liter and 5 x 750 is 3,75 liter.
The Paterson tank (5 reel) is the best choice - you can stack 5-10 rolls (4-5 days of shooting) and run them.
D76 is probably the best choice - 1000's of pressphotographers and photo journalists cant all be wrong. D76 1:1 for 10 min (or 11 for that matter) was and still is a "standard" among Tri X users.

No doubt Tom is right. My numbers don't agree.

Print this chart and take it with you. Tap water and electricity are very unreliable in Africa.
