Reflecta proscan 7200

Well, thanks, I know the review. Looks like I will have to order one to try it myself.

May be an alternative to the aging (and harder to get) Coolscans.
 
Hi just got one a couple of days ago. I'll probably scan some stuff in a few days, if you're interested I can send some links later on.
 
Just read the review, and it's very positive about this scanner.

The scanner has a resolution of 3600 DPI, and the test show that the true DPI is somewhere around 3250 DPI.
The only drawback of the scanner is, that it's fully manual operated. So there is no automatic feed on the slide/film tray. But the button on top of the scanner makes it a little easier, by pressing the button it makes a preview with the previous settings, and pressing a second time makes a high res scan with the previous settings.
In January 2010 the review will be expanded with more results from this scanner (Color accuracy)

I am also looking for a decent scanner for my negatives and the old family slides. And I hope this is a good alternative. I'm anxiously awaiting some results.

I have received my ProScan 7200 today. The scanner is surprisingly fast and IQ is good. My Coolscan V shows a little more detail but more grain / noise as well.

I will have to do some more testing and printing from scans but results are promising so far.

Those scans look really nice. You might have convinced me too buy this scanner 🙂
btw. what film did you use for your photos ?
 
Only bundled software, that is CyberView X + Photoshop Elements 6.0
You can get this scanner with SilverFast but it's around +150 euro
 
Thanks, that's what I wanted to hear 🙂 I got a 7200 and I'm using Cyberview too. I like the quality of your scanned pics at flickr, and I'm happy that you are "just" using CV, often the people tell that you have to use Silverfast or Vuescan, but I think the original Software is quiet ok.
 
Cweg, I was thinking about SilverFast, but since I would like to make wet prints in future I told myself that spending extra cash just for displaying stuff on the internet isn't the way I want to go. Saved cash and bought extra lens instead ;P

The Reflecta line is sold as Pacific Image and Braun in the US. (Compare the models with B&H's film scanner listings.)

With the death of the Nikon line, I'm looking at the Reflecta RPS7200/Pacific Image 7250, also. Scandig.com has what appear to be good comparison reviews.

The nature of this line appears to be "manual functions, with good IQ". This looks to be the answer for me.

Scanning black and white film with the ProScan 7200

Hi,

I am using this scanner for about two weeks now. In the beginning I did some testing and found out that the Cyberview software that came with the scanner worked quite nice with slide film but is IMHO useless for scanning black and white film. My impression is that shadows loose detail very quickly and and the grays tend to have a very unnatural, almost artificial look in some areas. The pictures just don't look right. One thing that is completely annoying about this software is that it will not save your preferences. It asks you "save you personal settings?" when you close it, but even if you choose "yes", everything is back to factory settings. Every time you start the program you have to go through all the menus and set everything from scratch. VERY annoying indeed.

So I bit the bullet and downloaded the Silverfast demo. I liked the results with black and white film. Scanning times appear to be also a bit faster than with the bundled software. I did some tests with the multiscan and multiexposure feature in Silverfast but couldn't find any benefit, so I went for the cheapest version (Silverfast SE). The software based dust and scratch removal in SE is rather useless, so don't expect too much from it. The Ai (full) version of Silverfast is supposed to have a more sophisticated tool but I can't comment on that. Of course ICE won't work with black and white films, but works nicely with colour slides. I would have given VueScan a chance but as for now, this scanner is not supported by VueScan.

So if you consider buying the ProScan 7200 for scanning black and white, be prepared to spend some extra money for a decent scanning software.
