When purchasing a "refurbished" M8 camera from an authorized USA Leica dealer, should I receive a Leica USA warranty registration card & if that is not received, is the camera covered by the Leica USA warranty?
Thanks, a.

I bought a "factory demo" from an authorized dealer and got a one year warranty from Leica, warranty card and all.
I believe they do that because factory demos have never been "sold" so you are technically not buying a "used" camera. IMHO that's the way to go if you can find a good deal on one.

Unless Leica USA has started doing something I'm unaware of, that they never did before, they never sold "refurbished" products (as in, one's that were sold and used and returned). All they ever had were "Code U" aka Demo's, which were used by their reps and at trade shows etc, but never sold to a private individual. Those always came with a one-year warranty. Again, maybe they've changed some things, so don't hold me accountable :p I suggest call Leica USA and ask. Most reputable dealers give 2-3 month warranties on used equipment, and the only place they can get an M8 serviced is at Leica, so in this case it's basically a de-facto factory warranty because they'd have to send it to Leica.

They do sell refurbished ... as in sold, found to have an issue and returned, reconditioned to new specs ... and sold as refurbs.

My local shop had three available this way ... at a good price ... and the warranty was one year. I will double check that warranty coverage to make sure but that is what I was told.

Leica has (or at least had) a program with dealers. The dealer sends the camera in and Leica checks it over, fixes what is needed and sends it back with a Leica Certified 1 year used warranty. I'm guessing it is not the "Passport" warranty, but a standard, "If it breaks, we'll fix it" one.

How is Leica's repair track record? I know that Nikon has really fast turnaround and generally very good service. I couple of times they seemed to have done more than fix just the issue I had sent one of the bodies in for.

Are people generally happy with Leica repairs? The body does not have to travel oversees ... right?

For me excellent. Longest turnaround three weeks and excellent communication. Disasters have been reported, mainly from the USA. Nearly all M8 repairs are done in Solms.

If so then it's something they started with the M8. Unless in the past they did that and called them "Demo". Anyone who bought any film M more than a year ago marked specifically "Refurbished" with a Leica-USA warranty, please correct me.

I bought a used M8 off of ebay and I was able to apply for my free filters. I received one of two of them and am waiting for the other, more popular one.

I surmise that the original owner never filled out his info for his free filters, which is why I was able to.

Refurbished M8 USA Warranty

Problem solved! It seems the serial number of the M8 was the same as that assigned to another item (maybe a lens?) way back when.. Maybe Leica is running out of numbers! Alls's well that ends well. Thanks for all the encouraging replys. A

Well, I got one of the two filters that I was happy to qualify for with the Refurb M8. Kind of nice to get it in the mail, it makes the wait for the M8 to sail back from the shop both more anticipated and harder to take. I hope to have clear sailing as far as problems are concerned after this slightly rough start ... and look forward to getting my cam back soon. :)

mine is a refurb from popflash. came with a one year warranty and card.

I purchased a "used" M8 with a 1 year Leica used warranty. The serial number wouldn't take on their website so I contacted the dealer who gave me an email of someone at Leica Germany. He fixed the issue very quickly and I was able to register and am waiting for my two filters.

My "Refurbished" from Willoughby's came with a "Used Equipment Limited Warranty" of three months, and as a bonus has a serial number that is registered to someone else? Leica was very kind and is fixing the white line for free, but I'm not going to deal with Willoughby's again- stuff was missing from the box and they were terrible at responding to my emails. The camera went in July 8, and was delivered the 9th. The sensor is being replaced and the framelines are getting done. No word yet.

I get that it was returned and rebuilt, but they didn't wipe the registration??
