I had a Leica IIIf for years and though I loved the size and function of the camera, I really struggled with focus as the rangefinder patch (even after service by Leica in Solms) was just not contrasty enough. Even did the orange film over the rangefinder window and still didn't help much. So I eventually sold it.

I've now acquired a lovely Nikkor 5cm f1.4 LTM (part of the first batch produced after the f1.5) and although I love using it on my M3, I'm longing to use it with a Barnack. I keep reading descriptions of IIIc and IIIf cameras for sale, mentioning how contrasty the rangefinder patch is, but is there really a difference in rangefinder patches on these old cameras. And if I acquire another Barnack like the one I had, is there any way to make the rangefinder patch higher contrast (is there some internal lens or mirror that needs resilvering or something)?

Thanks in advance for any help.

Best,
-Tim

Replacing the mirror is the most effective method. It's really not hard to do, either. Replacements are available cheap from Japan (ebay seller nobbysparrow).

Yes, it's quite a straightforward DIY, and makes a big difference. It's disappointing that this wasn't included in what was undoubtedly an outrageously expensive Solms overhaul, though.

Cheers,
Dez
