Rene Burri is a god...

Naah. . .But he is an excellent photographer who has suffered the fate of most excellent photographers, in that he is mostly known only to other photographers. And even that is less and less so as time and photography move on and those who have no background in the history of the medium become more and more ascendent.

Well, he is one of a few who have perfected the art of seeing and shooting very very quickly... He talks about that and it's really making me rethink some of my work habits... So maybe I was just a LITTLE bit over enthusiastic 🙂

always brilliant, i remember reading about HCB
asking for RB's contact sheet, and HCB looked
at RB's contact sheet upside down and praised
his work.

And, from what I've seen and heard, they have little or no interest. Carl Sagan predicted a return to the Dark Ages for the Sciences. It looks like the Arts will be on that train too.

I remember when I first saw the movie Idiocracy and thought it was incredibly stupid. Now I am not so sure.

I can easily envision what Sagan predicted.

Burri and his generation are so different than photographers now. The world is different. We will never see photographers like them again I am afraid to say.

It was not my intention to diminish Burri's greatness. Just wanted to make the point that we pretty much knew who were the great photographers of a generation or so ago, and we knew it while they were still living. Who knows who the great photographers of this generation are?

I was browsing a used book store a few years ago and stumbled upon a collection of his work. I loved it and picked up the book. It has been on my shelf ever since and every now and then it's a great source of inspiration. But I have never heard of him or his work anywhere until this week where he was put into the Leica hall of fame (I didn't even know there was such a thing) and on petapixel. The man definitly deserves more respect and acknowledgement than he's getting where photographers photoshoping dinosaurs into images or using an iPhone to photograph XYZ are recieving acolades.

You sir, just made my day. One could have not said it any better. Thank you.

this is nothing new...my folks listened to sinatra and i listened to the beatles...
the current generation always rules and the some of the past is forgotten...
life goes on.

My folks listened to Sinatra and The Beatles. I listened to Mozart, Sinatra, The Beatles and Nirvana.

Then I listened to Brahms, Shostakovich and the Ting Tings.

Some only listen to only one band with one stylus with one RPM speed, and their life is simpler and their listening more focused.

Others only listen to anything that isn't older than one year.

Some don't know how to move forward or back. One must learn how to move, and only then do forward or back become a matter of translation.

Yes, life goes on.

Acc. to a workshop tutor that apparently was HCB's way of reviewing lots of stuff:
Walking around tables of photos and judging them upside down. This puts more weight on the composition than the content itself.
If it also works upside down, mostly it is a good composition, if it sucked, then well... no approval from the master😉.
