Really sad to hear this.
Just today I read about him in Russell Miller's "Magnum, the story of the legendary photo agency". I have great respect for this man. An amazing photographer.
Here's a little excerpt I like:
'I [Burri] introduced myself to a secretary sitting at a desk in the tiny apartment with a little elevator and finally, a woman came and said 'Yes, I heard your name, Werner [Bischof] mentioned it', and she looked through my pictures and said they were very nicely printed up. It took het about thirty seconds. Then she asked to see my contact sheets and she looked closer, took a yellow pencil and marked some and said, 'Print these up for me'. I left, thinking she had only done this to get rid of me and so I sent them and about two months later I got an envelope, opened it and pulled out a copy of Life magazine. I wondered why they had sent me a copy of Life and there were my pictures with the credit, René Burri, Magnum. It was a while before it sank in.'

Sad news. Glad that he was able to assemble the book of his colour work, Impossible Reminiscences, in the last years of his life. I find it inspirational. Many of the photographs were personal photographs taken on the periphery of assignments, and they reveal such a brilliant eye, and a surprisingly (for me) keen eye for colour.
One of the giants.

Truth is beauty
He had a lot of respect for freedom and for living an intense life... I met him ten years ago in Barcelona while I was a student, by the end of my career... He looked ill and in pain all the time, yet he wanted to be in contact with young photographers, offering his spirit and his knowledge... I'm glad he won't suffer here anymore. Thank you René for your words and your effort, and for your photographs.
Cheers,
Juan
