Here's an interesting one.
I recently bought a CV 35/1.7 over the Net for a substantial discount. It's in the mail. Optically, it's apparently mint. But it will not focus when screwed into the M adapter. Here's what the seller wrote:
"When it arrived I realised I was not actually going to be able to sort it completely and so it's here for sale. I have reassembled everything, aligned the helical threads so the lens focuses as it should, adjusted the aperture so it now works as it should and yet I can do little about the focus action - no matter what I do it remains stiff, mainly as the final helical part to be fitted was distorted and so catches slightly on the clamp plate. It's fine if the three screws are not tight but if they are then as I say, the focus is really too stiff to use. Maybe a bit of machining, or someone has a spare part?"
The seller told me that the focus is stiff enough so that the lens unscrews from the adapter when you apply enough pressure; I wondered to him what would happen if he loosened the rear screws a little bit, and he said that the action then works but would presume that the effect would be that the lens deviates from the film plane. I wish I had a digital M to clarify that in, oh, 1 second.
Anyway, I've contacted Stephen Gandy as well as a local repairperson to see if they can handle this. I am more interested in repairing this myself. I know almost nothing about mechanics and have never taken apart a lens, so am open to hearing your suggestions.
Thanks,
Andre
