A letter arrived today in the mail from Leica Camera Inc.
The M9 has a messed up sensor, and I did not know what to expect, but I was hoping for the "Goodwill" waiver of cost.

There is no charge for any spare parts at all.
They will charge for labor done.
They will replace the M8-M9 Body Cover (MP Style)
They will replace the Image Sensor
Check complete of meter system
Adjust the RF
Check and adjust for good working order
Repair (replace?) M9 CCD/Circuit Board

Cost = $475 +$23.50

This is a good deal, right?
What is the cost of all these spare parts? They can't be cheap!

delete "good" and replace with "great". You've got to be happy with that price! Hope it's back to you soon.

it's a good deal if it was a well used camera. If it was a very low mileage camera I would expect a no charge repair. Only you will know

My experience years ago with Leica NJ was with a low mileage M8 I bought from the original owner. After 3 months the camera would not power up.
It was out of warranty but NJ replaced the "board" and sensor IIRC plus check all functions for factory spec..... NO CHARGE :)

Again..If you have a body that has a lot of use I think under $500 for the repair described is very good.
If it has fewer than 5k actuation's I would actually call them and say thank you but please do more for me and here is why.

Good luck Raid :)

This is excellent news, Raid. It will be like new when they have finished with it. Hopefully the camera will be back with you very soon.

I bought the M9 used, and I don't know how many actuations it has. I took 1100 shots last summer alone in a two week trip.
Not knowing its history, I am glad that it is checked out well by Leica. The seller may have been a professional since he was going to some country on some mission and he wanted to use film Leicas.

Yes, I'd say that is a good price. And, it's good customer service to stand behind the parts like that even out of warranty.

My repair was a lot more because the sensor was scratched, which is different from a parts failure. (I still don't know how it got scratched, but nobody touched it except me...)

Very good news!!!

Awesome news in fact!!!

Thank you! I am looking forward to getting back the camera "within three weeks".

I heard that the CCD replacement alone would cost several thousand Dollars.

Maybe they realize the consequences of trying to charge Raid 2k LOL

sounds very fair, and glad to hear you will get it back pretty soon :)

The luggage was stolen from our rental car and the M9 got messed up during our last trip to Europe. Our homeowners insurance reimbursed us for the luggage and Leica was nice to us too.

Great news! That's actually encouraging moving forward for me and others as well if this is the "usual" practice indeed. And I think you'll get 1 year warranty from doing the CLA so that's a plus. I hope you can reunite with your M9 soon.

Thank you Sug.
$475 is not much cost just for a thorough CLA of an advanced digital camera and without a sensor and CCD circuitry board. Plus a one year warranty.

Great news Raid. I am glad I settled on Leica when I moved to full frame digital. It sounds as if they are intent on treating their customers well and that is very good news.

This is the way I see it too.

I recently had an M9 with Leica CLA. It worked flawlessly with new covering, everything smooth, and perfect sensor (it was not replaced but mapped, aligned, etc). I think you'll be happy with the work.
