It feels good that Leica is standing behind their products. I have six Leica cameras (M9, M8, M6, M3, IIIf, Standard) and I love using them.

Great news Raid. I am glad I settled on Leica when I moved to full frame digital. It sounds as if they are intent on treating their customers well and that is very good news.

But you can call me Steve
It cost me $300 and some to have the power switch replaced on my X100, I've paid several $200+ bills to have things fixed on other cameras. Seems like a heck of a deal for all that was done.

You are indeed very fortunate. Send them the funds before they change their minds. Makes me a little more comfortable in possible M9 purchase sub-$3000

I'm very happy for you Raid and everyone else who is heartened by Leicas actions.
Is this not what we pay the premium price for when choosing a Leica to begin with?
Not to sound like a party pooper but....I feel like this estimate and response , it's coming as a surprise rather than an expectation
You paid for this sort of service when buying these cameras.

Great price Raid. Basically, you’re going to get a brand new camera for $500.00. Not Bad.

Thank you Andy.
I was unsure if I would get such service at such a cost.

I hope so, Jim. I have supported Leica for many years, and this feels good.

Now if they would fix the sometimes sticky frame lines in my M5 for a $20 bill I would really celebrate

A good deal in my book.

Leica service is great : my X1 repaired for free including new lens assembly(they saw the dust, not me), my M9P a new sensor for free (was expecting a clean). Unfortunately, my Monochrom is in Germany for servicing and the M is on its way there. It reflects Leica's fastidious approach to maintaining their brand, which I cannot fault.

I bought the M9 used, and I don't know how many actuations it has. I took 1100 shots last summer alone in a two week trip.
Not knowing its history, I am glad that it is checked out well by Leica. The seller may have been a professional since he was going to some country on some mission and he wanted to use film Leicas.
There's an app called M9Info available for Mac, Windows and Linux. It will tell you shutter actuation info from DNG files. Just scroll down the gray semi-transparent info overlay to the English section with download links, if you don't read German.
And I agree that the service price for your M9 is excellent. When my Canon 1D Mark III's sensor cover glass cracked out of warranty, Canon quoted me about $1500 for sensor replacement.

Thank you for the M9Info link. I will check out DNG files for my M9. This app is useful for someone wanting to buy a used M9.
I get a ZIP file when I download the M9Info software. Then, somehow, I am not extracting the files correctly, or I am not doing something right.

Such excellent service is needed to keep Leica buyers happy. While it took me quite a while to raise the money to buy an M8 and an M9, it never occurred to me to budget ahead for some costly repair. Mechanical (film) Leica cameras are not costly to maintain or to repair if you take good care of them. With digital cameras, it seems to be a different situation. No matter how well you baby your M8 or M9, "something" may happen, and a repair is needed.

Been lucky with my MM so far.... Knock on wood.
Yes a camera that is purely mechanical like many Leica film Ms are very reliable.

$500 you almost get a brand new camera, I will consider it's at least fair..

I doubt it that they differentiate for cost. I am just another person here.

They may add a one year warranty, I think. No matter how I look at it, I will be happy to get my M9 in working order.
