Repair - Would you like to get another camera in exchange for yours?

I just became the parcel of Zeiss with my repaired Zeiss Ikon,
the rangefinder was missalligned because I knocked it to hard...

For my surprise, I became another repaired and used camera in exchange! I'm not so happy because it looks more worn than mine.

In the letter was written because of faster Servicetime, and to say the truth it was really fast!

Would you like to get back your own repaired camera a little later?
Or you don't mind on your own cam, most important is the repair time?

I wrote back, that I want to get an exchange to my orig. camera.

I had a call with Zeiss, they changed it because it had also an error on the filmtransport.
Repair of that will be made in japan.
If I dislike the exchanged camera I can send it back for another change.

While ideally I would prefer my camera AND for it to be fast, so long as everything is working smoothly, not sure I'd mind either way.

Though, the more I think about it.....

The problem is that you don't know how the other camera was treated. What happens if that replacement then just fails in another way shortly after getting it? How long will Zeiss honor repairs on that body?

Only if the camera is brand new out of the box or maybe a demo model that has not been repaired. Contract wise I believe that you are paying for a repair not an exchange.

If I was a working pro who relied on the camera for income an exchange would be fine ... but for something that is used personally I don't think I would be pleased.

As said, you can't possibly tell how the replacement has been treated although it may appear the same!

Count me in as one of those that just thinks they are tools. Exchange my non-working camera quickly for an equivalent that functions, and I'm happy.

Agreed. The repair time wouldn't matter to me, I'd want my own high-dollar equipment back. I know how it has been treated and the real undocumented history of it. If it was something of a lower value, a replacement wouldn't bother me, but something of a worse condition wouldn't fly with me...

Really depend on what I know and what I don't about MY camera.
If I feel I got a lemon, why not try a change?
But if it has been good to me...never.
You could easily get a lemon in the swap.
That's even before we start talking about finish, and maybe you just got your camera CLA'd or carefully calibrated to work that Nocti-kon you just love....
Without asking?? Veeeeeery strange, to say the least...
Of course, a pro on a move to an assignement would probably appreciate.

Now if mine was beat to hell and the replacement
was in better shape thats a different story but I keep

If it was a FSU or some other generic camera, then I don't mind exchanging, but if it were my personal Leica or favorite classic Nikon slr for hobby use, for example, then of course I would want my own camera repaired.

Now, if one of my tools fail/brake I'll return it for a replacement...no problem there...

When I was shopping for my Nikon F4 & F5 I was waiting for one within a series of Serial Numbers knowing that all the upgrades were done by then...Now if they were to send me one, in exchange, and the numbers weren't where I want them or better I'd be a bit upset to say the least...

I also think that the exchange should be approved by the camera owner [email?] and then the exchange should be of at least the value of the camera it replaced.

It's been so long since I actually bought a NEW Leica that I can't imagine getting into that situation. When one of my Bessa L bodies gave up the ghost I gave it to s friend who wanted to try to get it working again. I don't know if he ever did, but I wasn't expecting it back. I suppose if I had an in-warranty M8 I'd take a replacement. Old cameras develop a personality. They become friends.
