I already responded to your question in your photo.net thread, but I had a question for you: which model is the IIIa? Is that the 1st version of the III without flash sync (AKA Reid III, type 1)?
I use John Maddox in South Carolina for my Leica LTM work. He could probably work on a Reid, as they are similar--perhaps identical. He's at L&J Camera Repair, 109 Royal Oaks Road, Greenville, SC 29607

The IIIa is the successor to the III. The difference between the III and IIIa is that the IIIa adds the 1/1000 second shutter speed. Flash sync didn't come out until the IIIf. In between were the IIIb and IIIc (and the IIId, which was just a IIIc with a self-timer).
I think you're referring to Leica model numbers, not Reid & Sigrist. My understanding is that there are only 4 varieties of Reid: I, II, III (type 1), & III (type 2). Both of the Reid III types had 1/1000th sec., but the type 2 added flash sync for M & X (late type 1s had M sync).

Per the normclarke's post (#3) in OP's other thread (http://www.rangefinderforum.com/forums/showthread.php?p=1697863), although the Reids are very close copies, there may be a difference in the threads for the screws used in the Reid. When DAG worked on my III, he did complain about the screws.
