I have a leica M6 and would like to replace the viewfinder with the flare resistant viewfinder of an MP. Where or who is the best to provide such a service?

The flare fix for the M6 finder is an upgrade to the existing finder. It is not a replacement of the finder. But the fix works very well. Several technicians will do the upgrade. I had mine done by Gerry Smith at Kindermann Canada. I know that DAG also does the fix. And I believe that there are several technicians across the pond who will do it as well. So it depends on where you are.

Hi Felix,
Depends where you are. I believe DAG offered to replace the mirror and fit a condenser lens which would be all you need to bring it up to MP spec. To fit a new MP r/f would be very expensive. In Europe CRR or Malcolm Taylor may be able to help.(Google). Having used a flaring finder in a M6TTL I did not deem it necessary to update, but thats only my opinion.

Cheers,

normclarke.

I've purchased the Shade from Leica goodies, and while it's a good attempt the adhesive on the thing came off after 2 days of use. Being said, it does it's job, I can shoot into direct lights or objects with back lighting with no problem. Only thing is I have electrical tape all over my M6 just to keep the Shade on. I want to send it to Don or Sherry but I hesitate cause I heard their turn around time is horrible (can someone confirm?).

I was hoping that Youxin Ye would be able to do it, but from what I have read on the net, he only works with mechanical Ms and won't do the upgrade for the M6 (can someone confirm this?)

Anyway, my two cents is that the MP upgrade will definately be worth it, especially in the long run. You'll just keep getting annoyed with the fact that you its difficult to shoot back-lit subjects.

Hope that helps

Does anyone have any experience with the shade from Leicagoodies? It is supposed to "fix" the same problem, but it costs a lot less?

Sometimes it is; I don't have a problem when time is taken to do a job right, though.

I did experience a 5-6 month wait on a lens I sent to DAG that never got worked on.

That said, his work is very good. He installed the flare-resistant optics on my M6. It's very well worth it.

A 6 month turn around time means you didn't do a good job. Sure...the actual upgrade is fine, but time of service counts for something too. Imagine ordering a burger from macdonalds and it taking 2 days or having your car serviced for 6 months.

Agreed. But I should elaborate: his turn around times, in my experience, have been between one and three weeks. That one was an exception, and it was a not-so-common request, but he said he'd be able to if given some time. I asked him to pull the plug after 6 months.

Anyway, it seemed that the more I sent for repair jobs, they tended to take longer. I usually like to give people space with stuff like this, and perhaps most people are on the phone or e-mail constantly checking if their work is done "already"; so perhaps I should be a bit more nagging...who knows.

ahhhh...makes sense now...3 weeks isn't so bad. Again, I haven't had any experience in dealing with him myself, these are just things that I've read around the forums

Cheers!

mine took about a month, but I had him swap out M6 top plate and parts for M4 M3 parts too. Not too bad though, i was busy with other things in the meantime and didn't notice the long wait until I got a surprise in the mail.
