Hi, the material which holds the lens cap on my Summaron 35mm has perished so it keeps falling off - I amlost lost it completely recently.

Is there anything anyone can recommend to replace it? It's the stuff that lines the rim of the cap - yellow on this one but on my Elmar 50 it's a ruby coloured felt-like material.

Hi
I had a similar problem with the push fit cap on my J3
The thin flock felt which lined the inside of the cap was still complete but had lost some of it's thickness due to age . My solution was to carefuly remove it glue it to some thin card or thick paper and then re glue the rebuilt felt into the cap. It now works fine with a nice tight fit. I used a small amount of cyno (superglue) to fix the card and re fix to the cap. Hope this helps

I think this stuff may not be the original felt - it's the wrong colour and it's not coming out in one piece. I think I'm going to have to find something to replace it completely.

Thanks for the idea though.

When I faced this problem on a Serenar 35mm (with the same type of aluminum push on cap with the edge lined in felt), I went to W@lm@rt, looking for felt. In the same general area of the store (crafts), I found thin velveteen hair ribbon in black. It turned out to be almost exactly the same width as the depth of the lens cap (I trimmed it a bit). I glued it in with Elmers glue. Works great, and looks very similar to the original.

You should be able to use the light-trapping felt from a film cassette, although I've never tried it.

I bought some material from a fabric store, and that seems to work well. The problem is cutting to the correct length and fastening it to the inside of the cap.

The light-trapping felt might be a bit nicer, because it already has an adhesive on it.

When this happened to the cap on my Summitar, I cut out a narrow strip from a piece of self-adhesive velcro, the fuzzy side, and stuck it inplace. The adhesive is very strong and has never pulled away.
