I had posted a couple of days back on timings for trix in pyrocat-M. Well, I decided to go ahead with a test slip to find the timings.

I used the 1:1:100 dilution of Pyrocat-M, but using sodium carbonate for solution B as potassium carbonate was unavailable. (thanks to Justin Low for the pre-mixed chemicals 😀). The developer was souped at 20degC and no pre-wash was performed. I calculated approximate timings using Sandy King's site and instructions in a downloadable PDF from Photographer's Formulary. I followed Sandy King's minimal agitation method, washed with water and Ilford Rapid Fixer for fixing.

timing: 14 mins 30 secs.
no post-processing done.

both shots are at rated speed of 400. The next time, I would shoot at 250~320 to get a bit more detail from shadows. The negatives look sharp, the staining is very nice, and I love the grain. You can visit the flickr page for high res links.

the look good for web versions, no question. and all pyro developers tend to lose speed.

you might also try some extremely high contrast - like night - scenes. pyro developers are supposed to be quite good at controlling that, too.

nice.

They came out great, Ashwin! I'm glad you found the processing information. Grain looks good too. I had always heard that pyro improved high-end tone separation and I THINK I'm seeing that in your images. Spooky stuff to mix-up though.

Thanks. Yes, I agree about the rating ... 250 would probably be optimal, maybe 320. You would might have to adjust the development time down a bit.

yeah. I have another set coming up with on-the-street shots.

Seems like a nice combo. I am currently using XTOL. Grainier? Hard to tell with scans . . .

Ben, I haven't tried XTOL. My negatives have good acutance (close to Rodinal - my primary developer), but the grain is a lot less.

Thanks Allen. Yeah, night scenes is the next test. 🙂

I'll go with 250, too. They look great, did you do any PS work?

Thanks. I just did levels in PS.
