It uses 29.5mm scew in filters. You can find them on Ebay, and photorama shows. You can also find fitted cases, with a "hard nose" for them on Ebay. The fitted case helps preserve the meter, stops light from hitting it. Look for an Auto I or Retinette with a case, they are cheap and the same size.

Case for automatic III
I also own a Retina automatic III, and absolutely love it. Please be aware that the Retinette case will NOT work properly with the automatic III because the shutter release is on the front , not the top, and the retinette case has no cutout for it. I know, because the seller of my automatic III sent a Retinette case by mistake and exchanged it for the correct case.
As others have mentioned, the 29.5 mm filters and lens hoods will fit the automatic III and provide lens protection when out of the case. It's hard to beat the case though, because overall protection is better than just a lens cap or filter as the light meter is protected too when in the case.
My automatic III is mint and came in the original box with styrofoam packing and instruction book. It takes great, sharp pictures and with a 45 mm lens, it gives you a bit more in the shot compared to a 50mm normal lens, which is nice for indoor shots and outdoor as well when you want to get a lot in the frame. -Bob

I did not know that. I bought a like-new case for my Auto III for $5 on Ebay. Dumb Luck.
With patience, I'm sure another will pop up. I've also taken to doing my own cut-outs for hard top find cases. I like the Nikon S2 case, one model is heavier made than the later ones for the S3 and SP. No cutout for the self-time. Nothing a pair of thick scissors cannot handle. Not the prettiest, but S2 cases run $20 and SP cases run over $100.

I found a mint original case for the Automatic.......I am still looking for a lens cap however.

The only original Kodak Retina lens cap that I have is for the 200mm F4.8. It came in a leather case. The Retina lenses came in Lens Bubbles, I have the 135, 90, 85, 50/1.9, 35/2.8, and 28/4- All in bubbles, no lens caps. The cameras came in fitted cases, again no original Retina lens caps.
SO- I took out the glass from a 29.5mm 80a Filter, cut the rim from a Kodak Film Cannister top, and glued the filter ring into it. Screw-in 29.5mm filter cap. Best I could come up with while reading the thread. It's drying, I'll try it tomorrow.

It's not quite the same animal, but I have a Retina IIIc folder, that I got from the original purchaser.
It has the Schneider lens system and on the f 2.8 / 50 normal lens, it has the following filter:
" Kodak F VII / 32 - O L made in Germany " filter. (UV? )
Along with the rest of the kit, there is a little clear plastic Kodak filter case, with the slide-around window.
I believe that the filter has been on the camera since day-one.
I like having a filter over the front-end of any lens...
Good luck finding one that fits your Automatic... I recently found a bunch of filters for my Voigtlander ProminenT at KEH....

For an odd reason, Kodak chose the outer diameter to mark the filters. So the Kodak 32 is really a 29.5mm filter thread. I have the original filters, and new ones marked 29.5mm. They fit the same lens.

The picture of Nikki is from 2001, and I'm good about sorting the scans. It's more than likely Kodacolor 100. Looking at the colors, you'd swear it was Kodachrome 10. The Xenar lens is lower-contrast, a little soft. A real 1950s look.

This one really speaks to perspective and detail, notice the rivets in the bridge. Again, this one is Kodak 100 print film, processed and put on a photo CD by the processor. Bob
