Return Of Random Gallery?

I'm still struggling to find the negative post expressing displeasure at the random gallery pics being returned!

Or have I missed something?

But thanks for returning it Stephen! :)

When the home page random pics were stopped over a year ago due to strain on system resources, there must have been 200 or more posts in various threads complaining about the lack of random gallery pics on the home page.

Now that Jorge found a way to restore random gallery pics without undue strain on the server's resources, now we have complaining about random pics returning to the home page.

damn.

Stephen
The majority of replies have been in favor. Please don't overlook that!
Thanks Jorge and Stephen!

This is a normal behavior. To illustrate I will refer to Nixon's "Silent majority" expression : it is not because a minority voices their opinion strongly that it represents the majority of the opinion.

Also, adaptation goes through cycle. When random gallery were removed, I guess we did not see straight away the advantages of the new one. People do not like change by definition.

I feel the new (old again) system (latest entry) serves better as a community binder where active members post fresh stuff, experimentation, new lenses pictures and so on. Showing random stuff that could come from years ago from a member that is no longer on RFF is less appealing, so in my case I won't click as much up there. IMO, I see this website main goal is not too show pictures (magazines, exhibits and books are better for that), but act as an "ACTIVE" community of RFF users.

Just an opinion. ;)

I just wanna know how I can turn off (or change) the fact that every single photo on the main page within the gallery is entitled "Copyright 2009" :D

Unless, of course, every single photographer has decided that "Copyright 2009" is the new "Rick Roll" ;)

Cheers,
Dave

I always liked the "random gallery". It seemed to make it more likely that I'd see something that surprised me. I liked that, so I'm glad to see it back.

Nothing will ever completely please everybody, but it seems to me that those who want to see recent gallery postings have options where they can do that, whereas the "random gallery" seemed (AFAIK) the only way to get the "please surprise me" view of things.

I believe Randy Newman wrote it but Harry Nilsson recorded it. The Jim Neighbors cover was largely ignored.
;)
Well, it was overlooked mainly because Jim's Glam Rock phase was just starting--with his album "Berlin Raw" , that took a lot of attention away form the song.

With the random gallery replacing the three latest posts gallery I get less views and comments on the new photos I upload here. It was the interaction with others that encouraged me to post here and engage in conversations with others about photography rather than gear, as I would often comment on other people's photos when I came to check if there was any on mine.

It's my most recent photography that I am most interested in having feedback one, i.e. my greatest photo is always my next photo. I don't care so much about the gallery archive, it's there incase people like what I'm doing and would enjoy seeing more.

regards,
Ian

I agree with some of your points, which is why I made this thread a little while ago:
http://www.rangefinderforum.com/forums/showthread.php?t=76094
I felt I was getting LESS views of my latest images because viewers seemed more likely to just look at images on the main page rather than going into the actual gallery. I felt lots of great shots were being overlooked because they could get shuffled out of the way if one person were to upload five different angles of the same subject, or something along those lines.
But now with the return of the random images, I think anyone who would normally take the time to carefully view and comment on photos will be more likely to click on the gallery button and view all the latest images on the main gallery page.
In the meantime we all get to see images we may have missed the first time around and get treated to a constantly new selection every time we refresh the main page.

Just about a month later and I have been seeing lots of photos I don't recall seeing the first time around. I do see/recognize most of the people and seeing "new" photos from them is really good.
Thanks again for returning this to the front page, Stephen!
