RF with 3200ASA suggesting

Hello!
Can you please suggest me camera and lens with specific options.
I have $400 and I need body with 3200ASA and 35 or 28mm fast sharp lens.

I wanted Canonet ql17 giii, but I'm sure 40mm is not enough wide for me.
Any suggestion?

I'd say a Canon P with a Jupiter-12 35mm/2.8 and a Sekonic L-208 clip-on meter. That'll be about $400.

It's not a RF? So if I'll use it in manual mode, I will see something like just "OK" in viewfinder when I got the focus?

Although...if you can get a cheap light meter, and get a Kiev with a Jupiter 3 lens...then you got yourself something for about $400 or less. And they tend to be quiet (compared to all other curtain shutter cameras).

The HexarAF is a brilliant design, and an irreplaceable tool: no other camera/lens can give you that speed and focus reliability in low light, so it's the best option without even thinking of cost... The lens is superb, and moves inside, protected by a metal barrel... And for it's price, it's like getting the body and half the lens for free...

I keep mine with a 46-52 step-up-ring on, and in my pockets B+W 52mm ND8 and ND64 filters as a really important part of the camera: if you have fast film loaded, without NDs it's impossible to shoot in normal light with camera's 1/250 top shutter speed, so things get normal when NDs make it a 1/8000 shutter camera.

The rest of the options are slower because of focusing in low light, or metering.

3200 ASA is relatively unusual on the older cameras, but a Bessa is always worth a look although $400 for body and lens is pushing it a bit.

If it really must be a range finder, look at Bessas, or Canonet. If you'd be happy with an SLR, then the world is your oyster, you could get a nice Pentax, Canon, or Nikon body with more than one lens. You could likely get a faster lens too, than for the same money in RF land.

For close to $1250 you can get one of the best camera/lens sets ever: R3A & 40 1.4

That's the cheapest great RF set including metering and AE for fast ISO3200 shooting. Maybe $1000 used...

You can shoot with the ($450) HexAF at 1.4 too, (for faster speeds than f/2) setting it to -1... And the HexAF is better for fast and accurate focus in low light... Not a RF but in the VF you can see the focused point (distance) and avoid unwanted background focusing... It has the best AF system I've tried in my life.

But with the Bessa you can use lots of lenses...

Buy any of them: both are necessary...

I wouldn't invest in cheaper options or tools with less capabilities, because you'll end up needing or wanting what they do...

Hexar AF all the way. They are $400 all day long.

Also, almost any lens is sharp enough for 3200 wide open. The grain and contrast at high ISO's are big-time lens equalizers.

Maybe just get a Canonet and see if that is good enough (though not wide at 40mm of course) or something like it.

Not all Jupiter 12s fit physically in all Canon Ps. I'd be careful about this combo. It may go over you budget but I'd look at a Canon P and Canon 35mm 2.8 and skip the J12.

Yeah, you won't be focusing the Hexar AF manually. That said, you'll never find a faster focusing camera in practice. That camera is the most nimble little shooter I've ever used. Focus is very accurate, that is, once you mentally map close focus parallax correction.

Hexar is much faster to use than QL17. The lens is FAR superior too. QL17 is a terrific camera — the best designed compact RF with a great viewfinder. However, the lens is, IMO, highly overrated. It's pretty good, and certainly good enough at middle apertures for most work. It doesn't look very good wide open to my eyes. Hexar walks all over it at evrey aperture, and, I'm afraid, has a markedly more attractive "signature."
