Perhaps posting this link in three places is too much, but everyone should hear this at least once. When I first heard it, I was unsure of the working condition of my brand new camera. Until I read that others considered the sound to be strange.

I recorded it with my IPOD, so the sound quality is low, but clear enough.

The sound is indeed strange. When I used the camera first time yesterday my girfriend said that the shutter is quieter than a Leica! I don't know, it certainly IS different. Some people call it 'a squeeky mouse' sound. Very appropriate, I think.

D'oh!
Mine sounds like an asthmatic squeeky mouse. But it is quiet. And it's a fantastic camera.

So people don't misunderstand, the sound you hear is the shutter mechanism recocking itself for the next shot. The shutter fires instananeously when you press the shutter button. You can easily check this for yourself by attaching a flash to the camera. The flash goes off as soon as you press the trigger.
