RFF Book Project: Image Sizes

I've posted four sample PDF's on my website for you to look at.
Because these are print oriented, the best way to look at them
is to download the PDF and print them out.
I used one colour sample and one B&W sample.

The file sizes are fairly large ... the final PDF for the book
will be humungous.


Sample text and photos:

Horizontal

6.5" on long edge:

I was a little surprised. The 7" horizontal looks better than I thought it would.
Obviously we can get a slightly larger image in vertical -- the 8" looks pretty good.
HOWEVER, should we standardize on 7" on the long edge for both to keep the
images all roughly equal in size?

Your thoughts and feedback are greatly appreciated.

P.S. After we decide on image size, we'll tackle font issues and placement of
text on the opposite page. This was just a first pass using Comic Sans font
and aligning top and bottom with the top and bottom edges of the photos. But let's
discuss that in a separate thread next week and just comment on image size in this one.

Gene, if 7" will work (fit on the page well) for the horizontal images, then I agree we should have all images be 5x7. Is there any down side to doing that?

My opinion is that to standardise 7" at the long side for a more uniform look. I agree with you that 7" for landscape orientation looks very good indeed. 🙂

Wow, guys, that was fast! Let's see what everyone thinks. I kinda like 7" on the long side for all the photos myself.

Rover, I hesitate to call it 5x7 because the short edge may not be 5, depending on how an image is cropped or left uncropped. It's good enough to do 7" on the long side (if that's our decision) and let the short side fall wherever it does.

Anyone have trouble with the pdf's? They crashed my browser window several times... (IE 6.0.2800.1106) 😕

I tested the PDF's using FireFox, which I highly recommend, btw.

I just tested with IE and had no problems.

I could be the size. If you shift-click on the URL you can save it locally and read it directly with Adobe Reader rather than using Reader via your browser.

I just looked them in IE without problems.

BTW, I think the 7" looks great as well.
