Australia/New Zealand RFF camera round Australia and NZ

Thanks Helen for the photobook project lead - I have seen some great images!

Here's a question for all submitting. Are your images going to be pretty much out of the camera i.e minimal post, or did you add contrast or filter effects?

Or does it matter!? i.e. submit how and what you wish?

At this point mine are quick n dirty, as taken with minimal post, but I don't want to drag the quality down!

Mine were shop scans no further post. I don't think I was elevating the quality though! I have learned a bit more since but back then I knew nothing about digital processing. Now I have progressed to knowing b#%*^r all.

I "scan" mine myself (dslr with macro and light box) so at very least the conversion is kinda post processing (I add contrast). Plus I corrected some crap exposures (with varying success). But I didn't go overboard (don't really have the skills to be honest).

I have given Helen higher res ones though.

I stuck to the "Basic" bit in LR's Develop module. So no cropping, sharpening, curves or the like. I did go pretty hard on some of them though, as I mentioned in this post. But, I have my scanner set pretty flat.
Anyway, get onto it John, you don't want to let the team down...!

Michael

A good question to ask at this point in the project.

I did sharpen mine in LR and I am a sucker for borders.

I am learning that the most important thing for the photo book is having a high resolution scan of a decent size. Over a megabyte is good. It allows for more flexibility in the layout.
Less than a meg is still OK but it won't be a full page.

I say submit what you feel comfortable with.

I like what I see in the photo thread.

An update...

The Fed is in NZ and might have one more deviation before it heads back this way to QLD. Sinisaostojic from Brisbane is waiting patiently for a turn when it gets here.

The book... waiting on people pics. I have about half to date. Keep them coming.

Maybe some folk need a PM poke? I'm really looking forward to seeing the book you're putting together.

Maybe we need some glamour shots of the FED for the cover?

Cheers,
Michael

Thank you ricnak! I am looking forward to the FED.

Hello. I have been unwell and have just found out me RFF username again. Which brought me to this thread. I have had a quick read through the thread and I fear I have let the team down. Let me know if I have got this right. We sent a camera around, took pics and people sent them to me and I am to make a book. I will go through the thread more carefully tonight and look for the pics. My son took over my computer while I was in hospital and changed many things so fingers crossed. Is there still an interest in the book?
Cheers
Helen

Hi Helen,

Very sorry to hear you have been unwell.

I think a few people were interested in a book - I know I was - but I don't think it takes any kind of priority over your health.

If at this late stage it would be helpful for YOU, then do it. If not, don't.

While the photo thread exists, we can all look back at it :)

Best wishes for your continued recovery,

Steve

Hi All,
I've got the images from ricnak and am bugging those who's images I haven't got yet.
I'm putting the book together now. Expect to see something by the end of next week.

Hi again,

stillshunter gave me his images, so we're down to 5? left. C'mon folks!
I've put the book together, each participant gets 4 images including the selfie. That's two double spreads. If I started including more images, the book would balloon very quickly! I've tried to select from your images based on the ones you posted vs the ones I (ricnak actually) was sent. Can you let me know ASAP if you have any that you MUST have included?
I've made it using albumworks, which is a Australian made product and competitively priced. Not sure how we're going to do the ordering yet, but we can solve that problem later.
I think it looks pretty good, but I'm probably biased!

Hi All,

So I've set up the book in Albumworks as a 21cm x 21cm book, one photo per page, four photos per person= 50 pages. With a photo cover (a shot of the FED), it comes to ~$80/book. If we order them all at once it becomes cheaper. I can do that and then distribute to the participants, but I'll need firm numbers. What does everyone think?

Michael, I wasn't a participant but put me down for a copy too please, if that's all right by all the contributors. I like the sounds of this book.
