RFF EuroMeet 2011 - ??

Would it be worth compiling a list of people that would be willing to travel pretty much anywhere for a 2011 RFF Euro Meet, maybe including those veterans that have been to them all so far. From the resulting group of people you could have a vote/discussion on location and then open it up to those that would like to go but maybe aren't in a situation to guarantee their attendance.

I fully agree with the sentiment voiced in Lawrence's poll thread that often people will vote and sway the result whilst then not join in anyway; perhaps the above is a fair way around this. Is it not also the way its been done in the past?

I've only been to one Meet and whilst I fully intend to join next years Meet I cannot, in all honesty, guarantee I'll be able to make it simply due to the nature of my job (and my love of paying bills and buying food etc:bang🙂 as such I'd willing give up my vote and let others decide.

What say the people?

Hola,

As you say Simon, it's super difficult for anyone to determine whether they'll be available for a weekend sometime in April / March. For example, I could have finally gotten my contract to be a lingerie model by then and be modelling somewhere exotic.

From Emil's post I remembered that we all had a chat about this on one of the days - looking through my notebook from the meet, we had three proposals for the 2011 meet:

- Lisbon
- Athens
- London

shall we add Amsterdam to the mix and hurl both love and hate at each until only one remains?

Lisbon and London are a good choice for me, as it could be Amsterdam or Dublin. Or it could be...
But I think Kully has always been , together with Nico, the one who made a lot of effort in organize the previous meeting and I would be more than happy to make a choice like London, which could help him in taking part.

Easy for me to vote for Istanbul, though willing to see where the cards fall and make it to wherever it turns out to be, of course depending on the alignment of the planets and all that other stuff.

Visit Belgium before it's gone!

I would propose Antwerp, Gent and Brussels. Really close together, a one hour train ride.
And great little towns they are.

It will be my last chance before going to bother the members down under 😀

Off course Amsterdam is a great second for me and the misses.

And Kully whatever happend to the 135mm I sold you?

I missed out on the Barcelona meet - my town - as I wasn't a member then, but since Amsterdam is becoming a favorite, I'd vote for another place, since I was born there and for me it doesn't really offer anything new. But that's just me of course.

@buzzardkid: you must be some kind of a lazy guy. Or is it you spent all your frijoles on Barnacks 😉?

From all places mentioned, I'd go for Lisboa, as an excuse for picking up my Portuguese. But I was wondering why nobody wants to go to, lets say Bukarest or Bilbao, Saloniki or Santiago...?

Best whishes & a prosperous 2011 to all of you!

Nothing wrong with those places and I'm sure they all have a lot to offer us as photographers but there is a small point in having the meet in (or near) a bigger city when it comes to transports. I would love to go to both Santiago and Bilbao for the food and the nature but it's at least triple the cost of going to London, Berlin or Paris.

Let's hear what Kully and (maybe) Nico has to say about it, shall we?

Brussels, the hart of Europe.

Be guided into the hart of beerland by a native and eat real food.

@ Johan, Beats Heineken and eating out of a wall 😛

Hello skibeerr,

The 135/2.8 is still not fixed ;-) However, I now use it on the GF1 to take photos of people changing in their bathrooms.

The main thing with this meet is that there are 'natives' who can take us to those dirty little places where stuff happens - so your offer is super good. However, do these places exist in Brussells? I was there a few years back and never once saw a midget riding a dog or a rat jumping over an old man reading a newspaper on a bench.

What Emil said - I would love to go to Bilbao, but it is too difficult for a weekend. We need somewhere that most can get to, say, on Friday evening and be going home on Sunday evening. Of course, there are those of us who get there a few days before and stay longer.

Amsterdam and London are both great transport hubs. I don't know about Lisbon and Athens.

I have no vote in this, but I will write a treatise for London soon, perhaps those bigging up the other contenders could do the same?

Finally, I think March is too soon, sometime in April or May, after the price peaks of Easter and before the prices start climbing for summer.

Oh no, we' v lost the bid for the football worldcup and now the weight of defending Belgiums honor falls on my frail shoulders.

But here we go,

The port of Antwerp,

You will be able to reenact this award winning image in the "Vagant" a cafe that serves a few hundred kinds of "Jenever"/Gin

Where are you? by wim_b, on Flickr[/IMG]

Leave Antwerp by the marvelous Central station, a work of art in itself, to visit Brussels or Gent my other favorite Belgian towns.

OK I think I found myself a photo project 😀

@Kully: That could easily be arranged though these options come at a cost, you need to get really drunk and then there is the day after.

I'll join forces with the lonely RF-Dutchy-Northerner and vote Amsterdam, though I'd love to return to Dublin too.

It's been a while since I've been in Amsterdam and have never been there with a camera before (then again, I've never been to most of the cities on the list either).

It will eventually all depend on the final destination if I can make it or not.

Dear Wim,

I'll take Antwerp as an alternative, since you brought up the Heineken beer (yuk!) and eating from the wall. Gotta admit, when it comes to drinking a good glass of beer, we have to import from the Belgians 😱 Gladly, we do!

OTOH, there's lots of exotic foods to be had in Amsterdam since half the globe is represented there.
Lets not forget, Amsterdam also has a beautiful train station! 😛

Having been there for Christmas I will say that one thing Brussels definitely does not have is . . . . . snow-ploughs. Ten centimetres of snow brought everything to a total halt - fairly ridiculous really, literally zero snow clearing. The jumping rats were frozen to the ground all over the city. Unlikely(?) to be a problem in the Spring of course.

Antwerp station is indeed a photogenic mainline city multi-storey station, plus it was all built (which seemed to take years) under the beautiful old building without disturbing it. The rest of the place is nice too - but then there is accessibility, not so good by air ?

I live in the Netherlands, but about as far away from Amsterdam as I can get so it is a possibility I suppose. In London I lived, studied and worked for years, but that was thirty years ago so have no idea what goes on now. It could also be interesting.

mmmh. I still say London. but more important for me is to meet the veterans again, no matter the place!

Nico, will you get a few days off from your fatherly obligations?
