RFF Optics Tests? Is this idea possible?

how can you trust the person you send your lens to? What if he/she doesn't return the lens?
Life is full of risks, Ain't it?
Here I am, a member for the last 5 months and I send out my $300 Nikkor to a stranger for a month of testing!
I am sure all readers here have loaned their friends something at one time or another...I look at Raid as a friend, granted he is a friend I have never seen or met but I look at him as a great contributor on this forum and someone who is well capable of handling my lens...it was the least I could do to contribute.
OK, since you posed a question I have one for you, do YOU try to contribute?
Regards,
Kiu

ywenz: It takes some homework to make sure that the recipient of the lens can be trusted. You can always record the lens number, take a photo of the optic, and then mail the lens after an email exchange. On top of all of this, you can mail the lens with a signature reuired upon receiving the lens. You can also trust the person to return the lens to you.

I am already thinking about the testing. This time, the lenses are longer (85mm~105mm) than last time (50mm),and the minimum focusing distance will be longer. This may cause some difficulties indoors if my target/subject is going to be a person.

We have a front door with a glass insert. This could be a good flare/contrast test. I would focus on the glass and see what the lens delivers.

Another test could be the face rendition (signature). I need to ask Dana to sit still for 30 minutes or so.

The third test could be the Bokeh test. I would have a light object in the background and see how the background comes out.

The fourth test could be the test for sharpness. I could take a photo of a book shelf with books.

All I need now are the remaining lenses.

Since you're waiting may be you should take some pictures with that nikkor.😀 🙂
Which camera are you going to use? If M mount do you have an adapter?
I was wondering if you needed a finder?

For a flare test, you could also do portraits contre-jour at various angles to the sun. Start with the person directly blocking the sun, and then move around to get different angles of strong light. Some of these results may also be interesting for the bokeh and signature tests.

If you're serious about setting up some LTM lens tests, I'd be glad to participate, but I can't help out until later this year (Sep/Oct). I'll keep an eye open here, and see what develops.

Kiu,
I will use a Bessa T since my earlier tests were all done with it. The other alternative is using my Canon P. I need to find a suitable lens hood for your Nikon lens. By the way, I was tempted to use your lens on a roll for the fun of it, but decided to give all lenses a fair chance. 😀

I like "real" examples that show different lens signatures, like the 50mm tests that you did, and think those are more important. But that's just me.

This is the most important to me too Raid. You are very well organized to be able to tackle the testing you do. I am happy you are having some fun while doing so. Leave the test charts to the commercial websites.

Eventually ------ someday ------ I hope to post a lens comparison. It will be for the fun of it only, and not likely include very many lenses. I would not want to have the whole forum waiting for me to send along my results, equipment, etc. Some weeks I don't get my lawn cut.

Thanks for your efforts Raid and keep having fun. 😀 😀 😀

Raid, I missed something -- what are the lenses you are planning to test (and are waiting for)?

Kiu,
I have been offered to try out two lenses;
1. Nikon 85mm/2 in LTM
2. Zeiss glass in a FSU lens.

They will be sent today (from California).
Then, I will have quite a few lenses to compare.
Should be fun.

Oops...some editing is in order Raid! look at who you replied too. That was Nick.

Does the Bessa T have framelines for 90mm~100mm?

Raid, you're missing out...I would have done two rolls by now.
Kiu

Kiu,
I will start a roll with your lens then. It is very tempting indeed.
The Bessa T has no viewfinder (only a rangefinder) and I use with it an external Leitz finder.

P.S. Sorry about linking my earlier comments to the wrong comment.

For those who have no idea what's going-on, refer to this thread:

As per Raid's remarks the following plus the Canon 1.8 Dexdog is offering are going to be tested:

From Roland:

1) Nikkor 85/2 (chr) (LTM)
2) 85/2 ZK (Zeiss glass, confirmed in the ZICG) (LTM)
3) 90/2.8 Elmarit (M)

From Kiu:
4) Nikkor 105mm

My own:
(5) and (6) Leitz Elmar 90mm/4 (old) ... two versions; chrome and black
7) 90mm/2.8 Elmarit (if different model from Roland's lens).
8) 90mm/2 Summicron (first version)
9) Canon 85mm/1.9
10) Steinheil 85mm/2.8

Happy testing,
kiu

Dexdog:

Thanks for your willingness to mail me the lens.
Another lens sent tome would mean another $12-$15 shipping to me.

I have to pass on the Canon 85mm/1.8 since I have the Canon 85mm/1.9.

Thanks

Raid

Kiu,
If this is the case, then by all means Dexdog send me the lens!
I think, if several lenses [with high insurance] are covered, the bill would be about $15.
