RFF Optics Tests? Is this idea possible?

Dexdog will mail me his Canon lens. Hopefully, by next weekend I will have received all "donated"lenses for the test.

Since Kiu has sent me his Nikkor lens since over a week, I have tested the lens today solo. My test is a general photography test where I shoot as if I were shooting with my lenses any day. I just posted a thread with some results.

Kiu ... check it out.

Sad to see the little response that you get, Raid.

Everybody loves to comment on tests though.

this is fair comment, but quite honestly, personally I bought my cameras and lenses to take pictures with. As long as they do this to my satisfaction I am happy, I just don't have time to do,compare or even read extensive tests of lenses. I have far too many other things going on in my life🙄
As for worrying whether my Nokton is f1.5 or f1.6----------words fail me!!:bang:

Not everyone likes lens tests, but it is one of the favorite threads on RFF for many members here. Believe it or not, but I actually go out and take photos nearly every day.

i wish i could more like that.
seriously. i mean no disrespect at all.

i love to read about cameras and lenses and i too often wonder what 'that' camera would be like or 'that' lens.
i seem to build collections of gear and then sell them all and start over again.
35mm and medium format, brands etc. i like playing.

the only constant has been rangefinders as i have had at least one no matter what else i might be shooting with.
and it's kinda interesting because i'm not all that picky and am usually quite satisfied with whatever i'm using at the time. (except maybe that yashicamat😉)

anyway, it seems it takes all kinds; i just wish i could figure what kind i am...

1. How about having the RFF first set up certain test criteria or instructions that are manageable and reasaonable.

What do you think about such an arrangement?

Raid

Tho I don't think that a scan on a monitor is a relevant information about a lens, for any kind of scan comparison one should include into the test criteria a framework for detailed scanning and postprocessing conventions. Tho this process makes one half of the final result we can watch on the monitor later I haven't read anything about this part of the test rules here. 😕 And don't forget the monitor calibration , otherwise the whole thing is just "playing lens test" .

Happy Birthday, Fitzi.

People know the limitations pointed out by you [and many others], but when viewing results of several lenses, these results sometimes reveal to the viewer certain features.

I wasn't getting at you!
I just can't be bothered worrying whether a lens is 50mm or 50.1mm;f1.5 or f1.55, resolves 5lpm more or less than another, I'm sorry but I just feel well----------Get a life!!! 🙄 As for it being 4.30am in ScoTTland wherever that is, well getting up early for work or catching the early light has been a habit of a lifetime.
I think i will unsubscribe now from this thread!!

John,
If you had seen the comments I sometimes get from some people on Photo.Net you would have wondered why I still bother being "here" or anywhere else online.

I also donot care about clinicaltype tests that measure the details you have referred to. I don't even bother with standard methods used by many here for doing lens tests. I just take photos and then show the resulting images.\

Don't leave this thread because of a comment or two.
At least, I welcome comments.

Thanks for the good wishes, actually my remarks pointed exactly on what the
minimal prerequisites are within the limitations of scan comparisons to get anything which derserves the word "comparable". Comparable at least on the level of meaningfulness on which a scan can demonstrate any differences.

Fitzi,

I look for a general nice look when testing a lens. I do not use any special charts or curvesbut I take nearly identical photos of one o fmy children and then I look at the photos. My pc at work has a more expensive newer monitor that shows different sharpness and colors than my laptop monitor at home. I can see that difefrences will be present when looking at different monitors.

More importantly, I hope that you are enjoying your birthday.

Ich wuensche Dir [if I may say so] einen schoenen Geburtstag.
