RFF Upgrade

Security might be the ultimate reason. We don't want some trojan creeping in the back door and destroying the RFF database, do we?

Not a matter of 'ain't broke, don't fix' but more of 'to reduce chance on broke, fix now'.
 
Every two years or so I have the RFF software updated.

Its a combination of factors:

1) to use software which is still supported by its maker - unknown things can happen and will need solutions
2) to add new features
3) improved security
4) these 3 factors combine to keep RFF up and running long term.

Bad luck guys!

Actually I though it was quite fun ... I'd been away overnight at the GF's place who doesn't have electricity let alone a computer ... got home and logged on to the 'show!'

It did prove a couple of things to me ... there are some ****ing whingers here and too many people don't read posts explaining what's happening before they vent their feelings!

If I was Stephen ... next time the upgrade is attempted I'd just shut the whole thing down for a few days and let them deal with THAT!

The good thing is that all that stuff that happened last night (my time) including the crazy posts has all evaporated into cyberspace!

Even all the PMs I made with another member during that period have vanished!

We view process as overrated here. Otherwise, we'd all be talking about the auto-everything D-X000 with the 18-250 lens.
 
Whew, I thought it was me!

I told myself that I needed to stay away from camera-related sites for a while because they give me GAS.

Then, I sneaked onto RFF and it was down! I thought, "Man, I've done it now."

Hope the upgrade goes better next try.

(This site is so good I cannot stay away, even when I need to.)
 
Well, I wish them luck (again – I made a blog post to that effect on the upgraded site that has gone into the bit-bucket) on the next go with upgrading. And I hope the whinging is minimal. It's ridiculous, the impatience and zero-pain-threshhold of some folks...

Exactly right. Looking good as of 10:30 PDT Sunday night.
 
I wish the guys better luck next time. RFF is a gift to us all, and if Stephen and co. need to perform upgrades to keep it running, well I for one can tolerate that. Even if something is working at present doesn't mean it will in a ever changing world and environment. Our own requirements change in tune with our surroundings. Even if there was nothing wrong with the Beetle, VW could not upgrade it to meet new requirements, we the user's requirements (better safety, better fuel economy, better sound proofing, larger boot space, the list goes on) took care of that. The analogy doesn't work, sorry.
 
good luck for next try. one more reason to justify regular upgrades is that longer you let system age and accumulate "stuff", there might become a point where it is not feasible upgrade it at all.
 
There was an upgrade?
Seriously - I had so much stuff going on this past weekend that I may have run myself down a bit - so.. I honestly didn't notice that the site was offline.
