The site/server simply needs some attention/maintenance.
Its more than that. RFF needs updated software.
While updated software will work better and faster,
it will be missing the many customized RFF hacks installed over the years.
Today's look of RFF will be gone because the present RFF software is not compatible with the updated software.
RFF will function better and faster, but not look the same.
So it will take some getting used to drive the new more reliable machine.

RFF has been occasionally slow to respond, or non-responsive, here in St. Louis. But 90% of the time it has been fine.
I hope we don't lose the white on black look that I like to use. And the nice avatars with pictures and info. There must be a way to give RFF a tune-up without really changing the format or the look of it.

Do whatever you have to do to make it better. If it means a major change in software, then so be it.

the biggest problem with fixing/changing the software is that some favourite things might change also and then the complaints starting coming in...kinda like a no-win situation.

I agree: when Flickr changed they made it so the forums were practically gone. Just leave it.

Indeed, as much as we all react negatively to change, we prefer a well functioning RFF to an inaccessible one with the format and features we like. RFF was somewhat of a pioneer when it started but now there are forums for everything and loads of open source software to support them. Have you thought about a community initiative? E.g. poll the members for their favourite open source platforms and then ask for some volunteers to help set it up?
There are always going to be curmudgeons that are resistant to change. 🙂
It would be a straightforward process to update the site to modern functionality and at the same time attract new users without alienating existing members.

It's working well enough for me. Occasionally it's slow to either sign in or open threads or sign out, but if it's slow to sign in I sign out again and come back another day. The "What have you just Bought" thread is usually quite slow to open.
