well, it's cheap for me. I don't take too many shots (10 rolls of film per year...) and I can wait for my fotos to come back.
but if they made a digital back for the Canon F-1, i'd buy it. I like the feel of film cameras. well, anyways, photography isn't a cheap hobby.

I'm not sure 10 rolls a film a year qualifies even as a hobby. Photography is cheaper than many hobbies, though.

Photography IS a cheap hobby. But the cameras and lenses aren't the cheap part of it.
If you liked the Kiev but your defective example wasn't good enough, spend some real money (like $100
) and get one in decent shape. Kiev's are quite common as cameras go, but obviously only the ones that don't sell closer to home will make it to the Far North. You aren't going to find a cheap, perfect Kiev on Ebay. If anyone has a Kiev in perfect operating condition, it will never need cross an ocean to find a buyer.
A Canonet is a very good alternative, if you don't mind a fixed 40mm lens. But in my mind, paying US$100+ for a Canonet over a Kiev is something you do for the AE function, not simply to take pictures. I'd rather spend the $100+, what many here would consider "far, far too much," on a clean, light-tight, smoothly operating Kiev body. But then I already have a Canonet and three Kievs
Again, photography is a cheap hobby, but you do get what you pay for when buying dirt-cheap bodies and lenses. It's like used cars - if you think you found a killer deal, you found a "needs work" example. If you look only at the more expensive examples, you ought to be able to find a solid body and lens that won't make you regret the money spent. Don't sweat it when people tell you they paid less for theirs - they likely bought less camera.

I go for the junkers. the more jammed it is- the better for me. they're dirt cheap- my Kiev was "EX" by Keh's standards (I.E. the body is, the lens has rust and it wobbles. and there are no caps. WHO SELLS CAMERAS WITHOUT CAPS??!??!) and was only $20. plus the $25 shipping, plus the customs wait...
so what happens? a month later, and the Kiev works fine. the speeds are ok (my home made shutter speed tester sucks- the photoresistor isn't fast enough) and it leaks a tad- but I can change that.
actually, i'd prefer a Canonet over the Kiev- more compact, more discreet, more function. because I don't have other lenses for the Kiev.
so I've reached a conclusion- no more buying for me, unless it is a FD lens or film (of course). A compact RF and a solid SLR kit is really all I need for now- i'm not even sure a Leica is right for my style.
and Fred- come to my place sometime. there's not much to photograph. and if there is, people will hate you for it (bro and I were honked at for doing some night+car lights experimentation).
the camera follows me out of town, always. so it is a hobby. maybe I can't "see" as well as some of you.
