Ricoh 500 GX

I don't, but I do have a Ricoh 500ME which is pretty similiar.

I have mixed views on it - the small size of the lens assembly means that I'm forever getting the wrong ring when I want to adjust focus, aperture etc. And I don't have especially big hands - short fat fingers on medium hands, if my size in gloves is anything to go by.

Also, at one extreme or the other of focus it looks and feels as though the lens is about to fall off... Plus the rangefinder patch is tiny, and not especially easy to see.

On the other hand, the lens is sharp, it's ridiculously easy to carry in a pocket whilst being cheap enough to not worry about damaging it therein, and the multiple exposure feature is a hoot.

Definitely a camera to try before you decide whether or not it's a keeper.

Thought you might find that - I was warned that when I got mine! It's just that bit better than all the annoyances.

Now I just need to find some inspiration for seriously silly multiple exposures...

It's the same basically as my 500 G with the addition of the multiple exposure capability and a battery check. The lens and body are the same, which is to say, excellent! I'm a diehard Oly 35RC fan and the Ricoh is the same size and dimensions and feels almost as good as the Oly. Definitely a keeper.

Interesting, Andy. I don't have a 35RC, just a Trip, but I find the Ricoh way more fiddly (mind you, you don't have to adjust the Trip much - in fact, I forget so often that I'm likely just to leave it at the red mark now!).

I take it you don't? Maybe I'm just a klutz...

I believe, only 500ME has multiple exposure capability. But whole family is real GAS bomb.

I don't have 500G-series RF, but only to have some dreamy wanna-have camera 🙂

I googled the 500GX to see what features it has in comparison to the 500 G, and it does in fact have the multiple exposure feature. Kind of cool for such a little camera.

Adrian, I can understand your description of it as "fiddly" because that was my initial impression of my 500 G. As I've grown more and more accustomed to it I've grown to appreciate its little size. It has almost the same dimensions as my 35RC although I believe the RC has a more quality feel to it. I've become quite adept at handling my RC so using the 500 G is as easy to handle. That was what I meant by saying it feels almost as good as my RC. It took me a while to grow accustomed to using such small cameras (especially in comparison to larger RFs like the Konica Auto S2) but the RC has become one of my favorite cameras.

I know my camera has Multiple Exposures, but even reading the Manual; I don't know how to make it work. Maybe is broken, but I tend to believe there is some trick to it.

Assuming it is the same as the ME, to the bottom left of the camera is a little slider which may or may not be marked "Multi" or "M E" or something like that - the marking is on a little piece of thin plastic which doesn't look very likely to stay put.

Take a picture, press the button on the slider to unlock it, and slide it all the way across to the left. Let it go, it springs back, and you can press the shutter again without winding. Piece of cake.

By the way, now it's too late, I got warned that if I tried it I'd want to keep it...

Andy, thanks for pointing me right direction - I really have missed fact GX also has ME slider. Should I seen GX on pics from right side only?

On spare time I'll compare GX and ME to get clue how they differ.

I'm interested in seeing your results as to how they differ...I'm completely unfamiliar with them other than what I've read or extrapolated based on my 500 G. Thanks in advance for the comparison.

In my understanding GX as earlier model has more durable finish - ME has more plastic parts (look at upper cover, lens barrel). Also multiple exposure controls differ - GX has slider+rotating knob, while ME - slider w/ button on it.

There's also 500RF 🙂


UPD: This night I got it! 500GX were replaced by two models....say, flavors - 500ME with multiple exposure capability and 500RF - same as 500ME without ME slider.
Both late models are cheaper made (so owners say), with top cover instead of front plate, with raised accessory shoe.
