Ricoh GR - that damned Macro button

I can't stand the macro button on my GR. There's nothing more frustrating than framing a picture, pressing the shutter, and then having the lens go zoop-zoop-zoop-zoop back and forth until it finally gives up on locking focus - all because I accidentally bumped a button that rests very near to the tip of my thumb..

(While I'm at it I might as well complain about the Exposure Compensation paddle. In normal shooting thumb rests just under the "-" section, and I've inadvertently shot a frame or two at -4.0 EV because of this.)

Is there any way to disable these button?s The manual doesn't say, so I really don't think so, but perhaps somebody somewhere has a suggestion. I'd really appreciate it!

Because I like to use macro mode often I have run into a similar situation but due to forgetting to turn macro mode off. Now I make sure that after I shoot macro I turn that option off. As to accidentally hitting the button, I've only done that a couple times but it was more of a new camera fumble, I'm not that familiar with the camera yet. Maybe it is the same for you and time/practice will help?

I did check the manual even though you already said you did the same and it looks like you can only assign Fn1, Fn2, Effects and then My1, My2 & My3. Macro is one of the settings you can register but only to one of the My* settings. I registered My1 as Macro mode and it seems to have left the wheel but only when using the My1 setting. On Aperture or Manual etc.. the original macro button still works-- and presumably so that you have a macro option with those settings. *I don't know of any way to disable the un-programmable buttons and moving the function doesn't remove it from another area..

So then my only other observation was finger positioning. That if you curl your thumb a little, and I'm sorry I don't know how large your fingers are, but if you grip with the tip of the thumb rather than the full thumb pad, maybe.. your finger won't overlap on either side. It's still a firm grip, just not a flattened thumb grip. Other than that I have no suggestions. Sorry 🙂

I use up/macro hold+front wheel to change snap distance sometimes, but often I screw up and activate macro mode. It would be nice to be able to specify a one or two second hold on the macro button to enter macro mode as an additional option to the instant mode entry.

Until then its voop-voop-voop-damnit.

I was shooting one handed ...two dogs in the other ...and only realised after a few minutes.
Fortunately not many ruined shots.
