Ricoh GXR Clearout?

managed to do the order, with safari browser, i was able to close the transaction, IE was blocking the checkout process, excited to have this camera back in my arsenal, now that the M9 is gone

Do you have any examples in colour? I like your shots (and you're doing much to convince me of the GXR's power), but digital noise can be made less jarring in black and white, colour is where the challenge lies.
 
Okay, I ordered the GXR and M module from Henry's. I owned this kit briefly about a year ago and sold it, mostly because my biggish hands made it painful to use. Now I'm happy with a Fuji x-e1. But somehow I have always missed the GXR and the chance to try it again for $400 could not be resisted. This time I think I'll use it almost exclusively with the CV 15mm, for square-format b/w work -- a mini substitute for my Hasselblad SWC, which doesn't like to be carried everywhere.

I think a 12MP AAless sensor resolve similarly to a 16MP AA sensor. Not that it matters to you since you have already ordered. 😉

My goody boxes from Henry's just showed up!

I have one of the batteries charging and I am looking forward to a fair weather weekend.

First comment, and a bit odd as I had handled a GXR at the RFF Asheville meet last summer ... much smaller than I remember! It really exudes quality though. Very pleased!
 
You know, this is beginning to feel like the last meeting of a Lamaze class, or a Birth-to-Three group. I think we'll have to start a special thread for all the GXR/M newcomers once they're charged up and shooting.

Clive, I often shoot lowlight color with the GXR/M, though I tend to post-process to B/W. Here's one with the tiny Serenar 100/3.5 wide open from about 25 meters away. It could use more attention to the highlights in the pastry counter, but I was very happy with the red/orange/yellow.

 
Good image. I'm more distracted by the errant apostrophe than any digital noise. 🙂

My GXR isn't due to arrive until next week at the earliest. Can't wait.

Oh, Clive, I think you're misreading it. Donut is clearly the name of the coffee seller, while Daniel is the big honcho for the whole cafe. (Oops, I misplaced my accent aigu. I have only the accent italique: ')

Seriously, I am a card-carrying grammar monitor. I almost skipped the shot because of the misplaced possessive....

Do you think this is a case of "exposing to the right" where a 3200 ISO pic slightly overexposed is better than a 1600 ISO pic underexposed?

It's hard to say exactly what "underexposed" and "overexposed" means when you're also tweaking sensitivity. "Expose to the right" is, to me, a rather simplistic way of thinking about it.

The point is to gather as much information as the sensor can acquire without over-saturating important highlight values, or compressing them too much. I find it better to think about the notions of digital capture exposure this way rather than thinking "expose to the right".

Proper exposure has to account for differences in dynamic range at different ISO settings. DR becomes reduced at elevated ISO settings. So you apply proper exposure ideas and in a situation where you have values that are mostly close together, most of the data in the histogram will be on the right side. In processing, you than set the black point to 'window' the data appropriately and render a full tonal scale.

No exactly the other way. The pic was (for the rule of ETTR) a lot underexposed. My mistake:

My GXR and M-module arrived on Friday.
Focus assist is amazing. Works perfectly with my CV 28mm 3.5.
Nice to have a small compact body, my M9 stayed home all weekend.
