Just bought an R1 off ebay. I always avoid the "not sure if it works, don't have a battery for it" excuses on ebay as these seem to be guaranteed DOA, however for some reason I fell for it (and got charge $30 for shipping, eventhough they only spent $4...)

Anyways, the camera turns on, if you put film in it winds (this camera pre-winds the roll), but the lens cover does not open and the lens does not extend out from the body. I took the cover off and there doesn't seem to be anything clearly wrong (ie broken gear teeth, etc.). Anyone out there have any ideas?

Thanks.

Is the display alive (not that that means anything, the display is usually at least partially failing by now)? Does it make motor noises when switched on, or is it completely dead and silent?

The display shows the number of pictures and you can even cycle through the modes/flashes, but there is NO motor noises whatsoever.

The lens should extend. You might check over at ricohforum.com for specifics and help. Not as good as RFF but a lot of deep info and experience with a whole range of cameras over there.

I had an R1 and love it till it tested gravity and found it working. She is a fine camera. Got me addicted to GR cameras and now I have a GRD III which is my main camera these days.
