Ricoh shows off the GXR M-mount

Interesting. Lots of good ideas.

Looking forward to see how focusing works on the M-mount module, whether just plain through-the-lens, run-the-sensor-full-time or whether there's some kind of other solution as hinted at in the earlier interviews.

Steve Huff's review stated more than once that what makes the GXR special is that the lens has a mated sensor for optimum results. Let's say that's true. Wouldn't that imply that an offering that allows interchangeable lenses would be less than optimum?

Unless it utilizing the coding of the newer lenses? But I kinda doubt that. I'm sorta banking that LTM lenses will be usable. I hope to get a Canon 50mm f1.8, f1.5 or f1.4 and a 35mm f2 or 1.8. I actually took some of my favorite photos on the 50mm f1.8 lens. Love it.

I did read somewhere that they plan an LTM adapter as well, which is cool

Why would someone go down this Ricoh route for using M lenses on an APS-C sized sensor, rather than a Sony NEX?

No EVF. I had a NEX which I used with some M lenses, it sucked, manual focusing using a screen in daylight isn't pleasant!

M43 solutions have too big a crop factor, so a GXR with M mount actually has a pretty good niche that nobody else has. It'll probably cost a fortune though....

I think I saw the figure USD$800 for the M-module being bandied about on another forum. It's true. Happened to a friend of a friend of mine. 😉

As for why someone would buy this rather than a NEX:

1. Someone who already has a GXR would obviously gravitate to the M-module.

2. Ricoh controls and ergonomics are leaps and bounds ahead of most cameras, let alone the NEX.

3. Sony, like Microsoft, is the evil empire. And I don't mean in the 'electronic viewfinder' way, either. 😀
