RIP Arnold Newman

I went and looked him up online. Like his Stravinsky and Georgia Okeefe shots particularly. His work was very much a mixture of sculpture and photography. And a little drawing in there too. multifacted.

admirable work.

I would hesitate to say that he invented the genre....I have seen older environmental portraiture.

I would consider this portrait of Isambard Kingdom Brunel to be a form of environmental portraiture, because the setting becomes an essential part of the subject matter and the subject of the portrait. It was taken in 1858 by Robert Howlett.

Having said that, I do like Newman's work. My favourite is the portrait of Krupp.

I believe Newman did study painting and drawing. He was also influenced by the modern art styles of his time. He did a number of photo montages. He was also lucky enough to photographs those artists that had influenced him. Taschen has a great monography of his work. If you get a chance to see an exhibition, I would recommend it highly.
