RIP E. P. Levine

I was shocked and saddened this morning when I received an email telling me that E. P. Levine, in Waltham, MA, is going out of business.

The owners, Jay Callum and Michael Bard, explained by email that they could no longer compete with on-line retailers. It's a sad but familiar story. The Boston photographic community will be significantly impoverished by the loss of this legendary store and its extremely knowledgable staff.

They are running a liquidation sale until Oct. 3. I stopped by myself this afternoon and stocked up on darkroom supplies for 20% off. Tripods, bags, and lighting gear were going fast. Though I got a good deal, I left with a heavy heart, and wished I had done more over the years to support their business.

they were in business something like 50 years or more?

yet it is a cautionary story.
businesses must adapt to the times
there is no other real choice

Sorry to read about the business.

As the old adage goes, the only thing constant is change.

Some adapt while others don't.

B & H is a good example that did adapt and has flourished using the internet to drive their business. I notice that after I make an order with them an email is immediately sent to me with the day it will arrive at my door.
