I remember Mary feeling bad for me when the battery prematurely died on my newspaper's NC2000 digital camera while covering the Bob Dole campaign trail in Hayes Kansas....she just kept on shooting her Hasselblad while an assistant boomed a Norman 400B lamp head on a monopod.
Here she is posed with Joel Peter Witkin and James Nachtwey in 2008...RIP mary...

She had a great set of eyes. . . . just a wonderful way of seeing. One of kind. We were lucky to have her; and will be poorer now that she is gone.
Wonderful photog.

I wrote her a few years ago. I asked her is she ever ran into legal problems with a shot of topless girl in a bathtub she did in the 1970's that was in her book. If I shot it I would get arrested for kiddie porn. She never replied to my email. I'm sorry I never got the answer.

Bummer.... a truly great photographer.
I have her "Ward 81", which is grim, gripping stuff -
and on the other side of the spectrum, I always felt that few pictures capture the sheer joy of being in the moment as well as
"Girl jumping over a Wall" (Central Park, 1967):

Very sad news. I recently bought Seen Behind the Scene/Forty Years of Photographing on Set, and it's one of my favourite photo books. A big loss to our art and craft.
