Desperate but not serious
(Per Steidle)
Born in Soweto, Mofokeng picked up a camera as a teenager shooting street photography, then became a dark room assistant and eventually a news photographer documenting the anti-apartheid resistance movements, social conditions in the township as well as every day life. Unlike other photographers of the era his work rarely had an outright political agenda, rather focusing on higher issues of spirituality, faith and the human condition.
