Let me know if someone's already posted about this

Though many of you would think I'm too young to appreciate the prog and psychedelia of Pink Floyd, King Crimson, and others like Rush and Blue Öyster Cult, I'm actually a big prog rock fan.

Just like to let people know that Syd Barrett - LSD-user, recluse, founding member of Pink Floyd - died a few days ago.

I'm not sure how exactly he would be missed by most, as no-one has really seen him for the past 30 years. It's a pity all the same.

The news has just circulated in my office. That is sad. With the recent Gilmour/Waters reuniting, I had a wild fantasy that maybe Syd could join in a bit of reunion fun that might happen.

He was having a tough time with his health.. I'm sure that it has hit the rest of the 'Floyd' crew .... not easy seeing an old friend go, no matter what.

It's awfully considerate of you to think of me here
And I'm most obliged to you for making it clear
That I'm not here.
And I never knew the moon could be so big
And I never knew the moon could be so blue
And I'm grateful that you threw away my old shoes
And brought me here instead dressed in red
And I'm wondering who could be writing this song.

"Jugband Blues", Syd Barrett

RIP. :(

heard it on the news 5 minutes ago.

I've been to a Roger Waters concert a a couple of weeks ago - I love pink floyd early to late stuff. I cant say how much the departure of such talented(and unfortunately sick) people hurts me. I'm depressed now.

The Scarecrow

The black and green scarecrow as everyone knows
Stood with a bird on his hat and straw everywhere.
He didn't care.
He stood in a field where barley grows.
His head did no thinking
His arms didn't move except then the wind cut up
Rough and mice ran around on the ground
He stood in a field where barley grows.
The black and green scarecrow is sadder than me
But now he's resigned to his fate
'Cause life's not unkind - he doesn't mind.
He stood in a field where barley grows.

Sheesh.... sad news indeed :(

Like I told my wife a few days ago - "We're getting old...."

Sigh....

I know this is OT other than the progressive rock link, but apparently Ian Anderson of Jethro Tull is quite the Leicanaut...
I sent him an email on his website asking him if he'd be willing to part with any of his gear, and that Sonny Bono's M3 had gone for close to $2000 on epay, but that I would expect his stuff to go for less since Sonny wrote "I Got You Babe".
No reply.....screw 'em if he can't take a joke.....

As a HUGE Pink Floyd fan I was saddened as his influence was heavy for the rest of the members. Strange thing is I had a dream three nights ago (and I rarely dream) that I was with David Gilmour and Roger Waters at a small concert in a movie theatre-like setting. We were eating cake together and watching a band. They were real nice to me. Weird I know. And now I hear Syd Barret died about the same time. Coincidence? I think not.

Anyway, all kidding aside. I was fortunate enough to see Pink Floyd in concert (sans Waters) a couple times, also seen Waters solo, and David Gilmour solo a couple times as well---I was a big fan of Gilmour's solo album from 1978. One of his concerts he played almost that whole album.

As sad as it is that Syd Barrett had his problems David Gilmour's rise and success with Pink Floyd resulted. Gilmour is easily one of the best rock guitarists of all time, I mean, who can listen to Comfortably Numb, and not agree?

Yes, life continues as one gets older..... I realize I was getting older with the püassing away of Lowell George, Townes van Zant and now Syd Barrett, possibly 3 of my 5 favorite musicians

RIP, Syd...

"Here I Go"
-----------

This is a story about a girl that I knew
She didn't like my songs, and that made me feel blue
She said "A big band is far better than you"

(key change)

She don't roll-n-roll, she don't like it
She don't do the stroll... well, she don't do it right
Well, everything's wrong, and my patience was gone
When I woke one morning and remembered this song:
Kinda catchy
I hope that she will talk to me now and even allow me
To hold her hand, and forget the whole band

I strolled around to her pad
Her light was off, and that's baaad
Her sister said that my girl was gone
"But come inside, boy, and play, play, play me a song"
I said, "Yeah, here I go"
She's kinda cute, don'cha know, that
After a while of seeing her smile
I knew we could make it, and make it in style

So now I've got all I need
She and I are in love, we've agreed
She likes this song, and my others, too
So now you see my world is ...
'cause o this tune
what a boon this tune. I'll tell you,
Soon we'll be lying in bed, happily wed, and
I won't think of that girl or what she said
