robert capa profile on BBC2 tonight

In the UK we seem to be doing quite well for photographer documentaries. Alway room for another Capa one though 😉 Thanks for the tip 🙂

Thanks for that, Dave.

I would have missed it were it not for your message.

Well worth seeing: what a life-style! Did you notice also how many of his photographs were taken from a low angle? Some of this would be due to the natural position of the TLR he was using (Rolleiflex?) but he seemed also to favour a squatting position for shooting on his RF (Contax?).

Cheers,

Seán.

LOL It's the 3rd time I've seen "In Love and War", each time I discover something new and realise just a little but more of his character.

As a gambler the squatting position would be a safer bet. He also took many pictures of children so the squatting position would put the camera at their eye level.

I wonder how many of us use a squatting position when there are no bullets flying though. Looking back on my own technique I prefer to shoot from a lower angle as I find it more stable and pleasing in the final print. Many people will accuse you of hip shooting though 😉

Manolo after a few Guinness spaghetti junction would be easy peasy anyway 😉

Have fun you lucky blighter, I miss my trips over the water. Remember to take some colour film to shoot those beautiful Irish girls 😀

it was a good documentary. I thought about it a bit: what would it have been without the "moving images" pasted into it? Would it have been too dry just to show his photos and the interviews with the people?

Yes, after his leica was stolen on the beach, he seemed to use contax exclusively (in 135-format). But i've also seen a few images when he had a folder hanging from his neck, i guess a super ikonta or such. And the rolleiflex, of course. Cool, they have been skiing with HCB and Henri had a rolleiflex with him🙂

I am using "squatting position" sometimes. It matters alot for perspective, esp. with wide angles. Here's an example. It still didn't fit in the frame completely, but without squatting, even half of it would not have fitted.

There is another documentary of Capa I've seen screened occasionally and that one only used his stills. Worked just as well but in a different way and shows much more of his Hollywood stuff 🙂

BTW Black and White Photography (UK) October edition has a really interesting interview with HCB that was not printed until after his death.
