My wife and I are leaving for Japan next week. We'll be spending a few days in Tokyo (Shinjuku area), then off to Hokkaido.

While it won't be our first time to Tokyo, I've never really explored photography-related destinations, other than visiting the Robert Doisneau exhibit at Fujifilm Square (Minato) last year. This time, I'll have a day or two to explore. Other than the large camera stores (Yodobashi, Kitamura, BIC, etc...), I'm considering the Leica Gallery Tokyo (Ginza) and the Nikon Museum (Shinagawa). Are there other destinations that I should add to my list?

If you are into the history of Japan and wish to combine this with photography you might want to visit Sengaku-ji Temple, the site of the internment of the famous 47 Ronin. I can't say it looks very glitzy or exciting. But it is the one place that leaps to my mind and is on my bucket list because of the deep connection it has to an important event in Japanese culture.

And of course, there a bunch of other temples and shrines in Tokyo that perhaps are even more visually exciting.

Thanks - added it to my list.

There’s a bunch of photo galleries mostly on the east side of Shinjuku station that you could easily spend the best part of a day checking out. Map linked below. Sokyusha, number 7 on the map, also has an excellent photography book store attached (they also have a big map on the wall that shows where the other galleries are). Monday everything will be most likely closed but other days they should be open.

If I had the chance I would hunt these guys down for some photo ops. They sing old Japanese popular songs from the early Showa era (Between the wars.). They are a hoot and usually dress in period clothing performing often in Tokyo and sometimes elsewhere in Japan. Their fan base is pretty old though. Basically they are a street band that has picked up a following and they also perform at festivals etc. I kind of enjoy listening to them for fun, and they would make some interesting photos.

Near Ebisu station? I had forgotten about the photography art museum (getting forgetful in my old age).

It’s always amazing.

And after you can go to the Meguro Parasitological Museum.

Not yet headed to Japan, but I have always perceived John Sypal's @Tokyocamerastyle as an authentic and very useful project.
I've saved his Tokyo Photo map, and has some related photobook and gallery recommendations!

On a business trip to visit Japanese Customs Office I saw a really cool looking structure from the light rail. It was the Big Sight, a huge convention center. Some years later I went back with a 4x5 camera just to photograph it. I don’t travel with large format anymore but I always say to myself “this would be a good shot.” Sometimes I get sick of street photography. I shot large format in Europe as well when Acros in Quickloads were available.

I was still pretty new to large format so was pretty proud of this shot but really it’s just a brochure photo nothing special. This is an iPhone shot of the negative on a light box. I really need to get it properly scanned and printed.89c71b124973a6dcb5cf2b3c3fd6eccc.jpeg
