On the down side, it look like both symposiums are sold out.

Thanks for the tip, I hadn't heard even though I live near Berkeley.

Just heard from the department in question, the Friday reception is open to everyone.

6-7:30 - Friday the 17th.

While the two book symposiums are technically sold out, the department has indicated that if you show up, their will be an overflow room you can watch and if any seats become available you still might get in.
