There's a great show at the SFMOMA now, showing all 84 prints from Robert Frank's classic mid-1950s photo book The Americans, along with some outtakes, such as the image shown above---which is not in the book.

He is easily in my top five favorite photographers. I found out about him in college and studied his books in the library constantly. I even got to view a screening of "Pull My Daisy" the movie he made with the beat generation poets i.e. Kerouac and Ginsberg.
I really enjoy the whole of his work, from his earliest work in Switzerland(I think) to the later work in Nova Scotia.
The latest work is very dark and introspective. Is he still living? Still Working? I haven't looked into it lately.

No, he passed away. Very unexpected on a photo festival or something. I've read it somewhere on the net.

He's actually alive, though he doesn't get out much.

I tried to find it, but I'm at work so no time. I did come across this though.

The book with all the extra fun stuff is called "Looking In: Robert Frank" and it's got some great insight into The Americans.

Vanity Fair ran an excellent article on his life and work last year. Highly recommended...
