Robotics Nerd-fest

I just wanted to share a few shots from a robotics competition some of my students attended today. If anyone needs to be reassured that there are smart and talented young people in school today, go to one of these competitions.

I think this sort of environment is where I personally enjoy using M type cameras the most. All of these images were made using an M8 and either a 75/1.4 or a 50/2. I was mostly ignored while using this camera - which is great. The DOF is a little thin in some shots, but such is the nature of available light photography.

If anyone wants to leave any comments, they are welcome.

Thanks Keith. I don't know if these kiddos will fix the mess we've made, but they will if anybody can. These kids are great. They will make you nuts - I tell my wife they are like electric chihuahuas that drank too much caffeine- they think and move at full speed all the time.

Great Photos. There certainly a a bunch of bright people coming up the ranks...but will it be enough? Im optimistic, but you have to be in some ways, given i have a long time to live still (hopefully!).

It's a difficult road for sure. The next generation (which I guess i fall into) was raised by an older generation that had the highest level of wealth ever. In turn, there was a lot of complacency built in that is tough to overcome.

I was lucky enough to photograph some kids from a school for gifted arts students recently. They were doing an interprative dance workshop under the tuition of one of this country's best exponents of the style and I was gobsmacked at how fast they picked up on everything she threw at them!

They are our future! 🙂

My grandson did robotics competition for three years in HS. Some of the linkages they calculated were amazing.
Nice photos, some wonderful faces. They must be fun and inspirational to watch.

It is nice to see kids involved in these sort of things, although I am no fan of 'nerdism' and prefer to see kids balance their mental life with a lot of physical activity, like work and sports.

A few years ago, I stopped teaching at Georgia Tech when I was just plain worn out from the 80 hour weeks. But the decision to stop teaching coincided with the last two years of students who showed no ambition, whined about wanting something for nothing and were mostly plain lazy. I would guess the percentage of these students was about 20%. Never saw this in my classes in the last 21 years but two in a row was two more than I could take so I left teaching.

But, the 80% who were putting out the effort were simply awesome and I learned so much from teaching them.
