I managed to buy some Rodinal before local dealers ran out of stock..OK, I know how to use it, just one plain question. When I make 1 liter of dilution, say 1:50, do I have to throw it away every time, or it can develop more than 1 film, and if, how many films...I just cannot find that data on web. I have a few EFKE developers, and some are intended for single developing, and some for 5-10 35mm films..so what about Rodinal?
thanks in advance

Rodinal is a single shot developer, best used when mixed immediately prior to usage. At least that's the wisdom that's been passed down to me.

😱 This is definitely the fastest reply ever, on any forum...thank You, Mephiloco.
I was using it for single developing. But I thought I was throwing away precious usable liquid. So, I'm not.🙁
Now...why I didn't buy more of it while I could :bang:

Thanks again!

Perhaps I misunderstood, but don't mix a litre of it when your tank is (maybe) 350ml or so. Just the amount that you need for the next development cycle.
🙂

EDIT: I forgot to mention that you need to bear in mind the minimum amount of Rodinal needed to develop a roll of film, several(?) ml per 35mm/120 roll.

That could mean that at low dilutions you have to use a relatively large volume of developer in order for it to contain enough developer to do the job - in which case it might be good to think of using a different dilution, depending on the expected effect.

Agfa said, "10ml per roll or 80 sq. in."

Many people here and other forums say they get good results with 5ml per roll.

5 ml Rodinal + 500 ml water (1:50) for 1 roll seems like a safe way to go.

hhh rodinal

hhh rodinal

I use 1:25 to develop 6-10 HP5s in total and I can store it diluted for a month or so. A little different story with TRi-x and Tmax they color up the solution thus adding tint to the film tonality. Just try it with your type of film and refer to digitaltruth.com for times. Good luck!

Freestyle has plenty of it. IIRC its around $14 for 1 litre of concentrate.

As far as dilutions, I usually do 1:125 or 1:150, but I'm usually pushing tri-x to 3200 or faster. 1:125, 35 minutes, single inversion at the 17.5 minute mark. Chemicals at 80F. I'm pleased with the results.

Of course, I gave the 1 litre for example, because on some EFKE developers and fixers sais: "1 litre of dillution can be used for xx 35mm films or xx m2 of paper". Hence the 1 liter 🙄. But, as my tank uses aprox. 600 ml for 120 film and 400 ml for 35mm film...i usually make 1 litre of 1:50 if I intend to use it quickly. I have never tried to leave the prepared solution stored for long.

Hmmm...please elaborate on that 😕. You make 2 litres of dillution, than use 300 ml at the time and throw away, or You develop 10 rolls with the same dillution??

With EFKE films, I usually add about 30% to digitaltruth times.

And I must say that Rodinal is MUCH better than Efke FR16 I used before. 13 minutes in Rodinal do the job much better than 4 minutes in FR16 😀.

Moretto, you just prepare what you need.
A syringe is generally the easiest way to measure Rodinal.
In Croatia EFKE used to have a develope called APH09r, which is essentially the original Rodinal but a weaker so results are same but dilutions are different (Rod 1+50 = APH09 1+40)

As per the amount needed, 1+100 and 1+200 work as well, but AGFA was against those because they like quite high contrast negatives.

I have tried 3ml Rodinal + 600 water for 35mm film with no problem.

Another question, where do you buy EFKE in Croatia?
I'll go to Split for a few days in september and want to bring back some EFKE 25 and 100 (bulk rolls if possible)

Nobody said there would be a test.

Nobody said there would be a test.

That is 1:100 and not 1:50.

No clue if it is safe or not since I am a 1:50 man.

Sorry. I only use Rodinal 1:100.

1*5 = 5ml Rodinal
50*5 = 250ml water

Double that to make 510ml of working solution. 10ml of rodinal in 500 ml water. If 500ml of solution will cover 2 35mm reels, then it should be good for 2 rolls of film. Otherwise, it is MORE than good enough for 1 36 esp. roll of 35mm film.

For measuring Rodinal and Photo-Flo I use a 10 ml graduated cylinder.

I usually buy Efke directly in the factory, when I go to Zagreb, because the factory is in Samobor, which is about 20 km from Zagreb. 35 mm films cost about 15 HRK there, which is about 2 € .
Normally, in the photo stores they cost almost 4€, if You find it. I know a shop in Zagreb, and one in Rijeka. For Split...hm..I'll have to get back to You about that...in a few hours..

@ titrisol: Sorry, but seams that there's no shop in Split that has Efke in stock. They are all ("all " = a few dinosauruses like me and You 😀 ) ordering it either directly from the factory or from www.praxis.hr . The page is in Croatian language, so it is no big help to You. The good news is that Fotokemika (EFKE) still works, still has good films (with exceptions to GEKKO they are rebagging). The page is under construction, but has basic info about products : www.fotokemika.hr

However, i see that they have efke films at freestyle photo supplies, and cheaper than here in Rijeka. Maybe that's the way to go. because I don't think You'l find it in Split. Or just make a detour on your way to Split, and pass through Samobor....as fresh and as cheap as can be 😉😉

Freestyle is no help for me in the Netherlands.... fotoimpex carries EFKE films rebadged as ADOX, very very fine films
Samobor is quite far from Split me thinks (I'll fly in) and maybe I can order and have them delivered to the hotel 😉

Efke films are doing well in Rodinal but even better in Beutler. Beutler gives even higher acutance then Rodinal and the developer is very easy to make yourself.

About Fotokemika films: The Efke 25 film can compete with films like Fuji Acros 100 and Rollei Pan 25. This film has the finest grain and is interesting due to the pan-orthochromatic spectra.

Best regards,

Robert

I have used as little as 2.5ml (1:100, 250ml tank) to develop a single roll of film, works fine. I use a syringe made for dosing liquid medicines to babies; the key is accuracy and consistency.

I have a bunch of Efke 25 in my freezer. Bought it just after it expired for something like $1.50 a roll. Haven't shot any in over a year though

Hm..Samobor is a bit far ones You are in Split 🙄 I did not know what are Your arrangements..You could be rolling on a Harley across the Europe 😎.
And who knows..maybe they would be willing to deliver via post to the hotel. Ones You get to Croatia, here's the Fotokemika phone number: 01 3361133. (+385 in front if You are using foreign cellular, which You won't) 😀😀😀

As it is a factory, they work from 6:30 till 14:30.

Anyway, guys, thanks for Rodinal tips...You were very helpful!! As always. 🙂
