The commercial form of Rodinal, the original brand or the Adox Rodinal from Freestyle is dangerous out of the bottle until greatly diluted. Gloves and goggles. One splash could be very serious injury.

I liked the results with stand development, but I stopped using it. Didn't want the bottle around.

I've used Rodinal Since I was 15 years old. My high school photography teacher thought it was the greatest developer ever invented, and it was the only developer he kept for us kids to use. I've gotten the concentrate on my skin before with no injury, though I did rinse it off right away.

How exactly does mixing those chemicals together "neutralize them"? Stop bath may eliminate the development action but it doesn't neutralize the chemicals.

Combine a mildly alkaline solution with a mildly acidic solution and the pH is neutralized- to some extent.

I should also point out that I only do this with developers that I understand to be relatively not toxic, like caffenol or vitaminC developers and the like. I try to recycle and/or otherwise properly dispose of the toxic photochemistry. Actually, that goes to why I was concerned when I read the title of this thread. Rodinal is a favorite developer, and I had always been under the impression that it was fairly benign. I've spilled drops of concentrate on my skin plenty of times without incident, too. Of course I wash it off quickly, and try not to make a habit of it...

Best thing is you're not comfortable with it don't use it.

I'm another that's used it 50 years and never had a problem. Of course I wouldn't get it in my eyes but that's just common sense to be careful with anything like this. I've had the concentrate on my hands and never even gotten the slightest irritation but then I don't leave it on my hands for long periods. There's common sense involved with any chemical agent whether toilet bowl cleaner, drain cleaner, household bleach, insecticides, herbicides or any number of other things around the house. Honestly I'm more concerned with household chemicals that I am my Ordinal.

If you investigate the chemicals in most developers you'll find many that are more toxic and dangerous then the ingredients in Rodinal.

Just because the PH isn't 7 doesn't mean it's hazerdous. Even deionized water has a slightly lower PH than 7. Let's talk the hydrochloride acid in your stomach. I'll have to look up the PH but it's considerably lower than 7.

Edit:

The HCL in your stomach has a PH range of 1.5-3.5 which is very acid. The dangers of a higher or lower ph than 7 which is neutral is all relative.

Remember that the dose makes the poison. Using Rodinal at 1% as stand development guarantees it is completely used. If you have doubts, take a 5 gallon container and dump the used developer there. Then take it to the hazardous waste collection fair set monthly by the cities. The main concern at the wastewater treatment plants is the heavy metals (cadmium, chromium, silver, etc.) I take my one-gallon of used-up bath and fixer to the once-a-month collection point set by the City. Caffenol may be a bit friendly, but stinks worst than any other.

When you cut onion at the kitchen, the Sulfidic acid goes gas and get to your eyes. Your eyes produce tear (water) to dilute the acid. If you buy two habanero peppers and place them on your desk, the acid will get to your eyes the same way. You shed tears and eventually get washed with water. How much is the pH of those acids, 2? Developers are the other extreme of the acids, alkaline , equally bad, it corrodes. Water is the solution. Use goggles and gloves.
