Any body compared the 2 lens. I'm sure I saw a thread a long time ago, but can't find it. I an interested in the contrast/resolution f2.8-f8, plus any other observations. I have a Minox, so I am interested how the Sonnar compares. Is the Soonar any different on the 35S and 35SE?

hi KRAM, I own a Rollei 35S with its 40/2.8 Sonnar and I'm awaiting the postman bringing my minox, when I shoot a few rolls togther I will compare them and let you know

regards Mick

I shoot the Rollei Sonnar 40/2.8 in LTM from the Rollei RF camera. Absolutely love it.

I have a Minox here which I've not shot yet- it's my brother in laws and he wants me to sell it for him.

lxmike - I went for it, and now have a 35SE (arrived yesterday). I will compare it with my Minox GT-E (delta 100). Main problem I have noticed is, the meter seems to read ~2 stops over compared to the minox (I have a 4 batteries in a converter see: http://www.smallbattery.company.org.uk/sbc_v27px_adapter.htm

which gives the 5.6V for the rollei). It works fine inn the minox GT (yes I have on of them as well as the GT-E - but it suffers from sticky shutter syndrome )

The Minox is perfect for cities, indoors, people, quick 'n easy documentation, the Rollei renders sharp enough to be used for landscape.

I've never used a Rollei (except tlr's) but I can't see much wrong with the Minotar f2.8.

Minox EL - Whitby Harbour.

The Minox is great, but due to the low(ish) cost of the Rollei - and it's in great condition, i thought I get one. Main problem so far - it reads 3 stops over. Have just loaded XP2 plus in it and will shoot at the 50 ASA setting (which will give the true 400 asa film speed setting?)
I love the build quality of the Rollei - how the film counter works, the all metal (well 95%) construction - clear viewfinder etc. Will let you know of the delta 100 results.

FFilm has been processed with test shoots from f2.8 to f11 at near infinity. 5X7 gloss prints, when examined with a 5.5 loupe- The Rollei sonnar is better (more detail, slightlly better resolution, but you really have to look for it. Looking at the straight prints, the difference in not really noticeable (only at the edge of field). The main diffrence is... I don't like the Rollei meter. Not sensitive enough. It can't meter lower than 1/125 at f2.8 with 400asa:-(.
On a scale focus front my 0.9m at f5.6 photo was fine. Scale focusing just requires a little (or alot) practise. And it's a 40mm lens not 35mm.

I've had a Rollei 35SE with the Sonnar lens since new in '82, and have used it mainly for slides. It is very sharp, great colour contrast, and a first rate lens. Briefly I had a Minox 35GL but only shot 1 roll of print film. The camera had that fatal intermittent shutter firing problem (you still hear a shutter sound so until the film is developed you can't tell if it actually opened or not) and only about half of the roll was exposed. I was surprised at how sharp the images were, but never did a side-by-side comparison. After that experience I returned the camera for refund.

My imnpression was that they are both really great lenses considering the small size of the cameras. A more significant factor was the reliability, and there is no question in my mind that the Rollei is the better built camera. The Rollei has a 40mm whereas the Minox is 35mm. After using the Rollei for so long I have a strong preference for 40mm and found the difference noticeable, but most people prefer 35mm. They are quite different cameras. The least I would be concerned about in comparing these two would be the lenses.

I know, but In had to do it. I love the mechanics of the Rollei, it is well made. will try and put a film through it and use it like my Minox camera. My GT is suffering from the shutter problem (occurred about 3 months after I read about the problem on rrf). It is a pain, but I know when the shutter has not opened and only the shutter 'trip' has sounded.
