Rollei 35 question

So I ordered these adapters for 675 batteries. I can’t get the darn battery seated all the way in there. If I’m looking at the diagram on the camera correctly it shows + side of a PX 625 facing up. Comparison h that to how batteries are in this adapter on the eBay listing it’s sort of backwards. The + side of a 675 battery is the totally flat side. Any idea what is correct?

I think that the picture in the advertisement is incorrect. The flat side (+) should face up -- that is, against the battery compartment cover.

Well I popped a wein cell in instead. It appears the meter is dead. I probably need to send this one back. Shame though. It’s a cosmetically great. No corner dents.

Before you send it back: is the Weincell good? You probably know that Weincells have a short life span…

The weincell was very old but unused. I’ll try the 675’s. I’m going to heat that adapter up and see if I can get it to seat. Still confused about the correct orientation.

Just noticed all the slow speeds operated as bulb too. It’s definitely going back. Anyone ever seen that?

In my experience: The meter reading will be non-linear and very difficult to compensate for.
Better to just take the battery out and use a hand-held meter, or estimate.

BTW: That's a nice, clean looking camera. I'd send it to Harry Fleenor at Oceanside Camera Repair and have it overhauled.
You don't see too many that are that clean anymore.

Certainly. I do it all the time. Just reduce the film speed one stop -- 200 for 400 speed film for example. I know people say this is sub-optimal since 625 alkalines' voltage will vary over time, but I think this is not that big a deal, especially with negative film.

I did something similar recently and had success. I can confirm the correct battery orientation is as shown below:



I use a 1.55V silver oxide battery SR44SW (357) with the CRIS MR-9 adapter. The readings tally with my Sekonic handheld meter.

I have another set of Rollei 35s which has sticky slow shutter speeds, ie. 1/15 down to 1/2 all behaves as 'B'. My camera repair friend told me to properly fix it is a tedious job, but if you are lucky, a small spray of oil could solve the problem (as in my case, I was really lucky.) Having said that, I really don't think it is that big a deal that 1/15 and below are that important (to me as I shoot hand-held 100% of the time). YMMV.

yes, it is quite a common issue. I did DIY cleaning, it's not a complicated thing (I found some instructions online). As to the meter - I'd rather use the external one. My black 35S had some corroded wires, I replaced it - it worked for a while, but was not reliable. I just removed the battery and bought the Keks meter.

I could not find the same video, but this one basically shows the same - some parts as shown need to be cleaned with the lighter fuel and lubed. Hopefully it is not the shutter blades issue and it only suffice to remove the top of the camera. In my case it worked perfectly - all slow speeds are working fine now, I shot maybe 10 films since the fix.

Seller gave me a significant credit. I watched a video on freeing up the slow shutter speeds and it seems pretty simple. Camera is so nice looking I’m going to keep it meter or not. Maybe I’ll find something simple wrong with the meter when I take the top off.
