Rollei retro400 and rodinal

Hi Guys,

Just received my 6 x 500ml of Rodinal from Fotohuis Rovo in Holland and they were so kind to include a testroll of Rollei retro 400. I understand this is basically APX400, but am not 100% sure. Development times in the official publications seem incorrect (30 minutes in Rodinal 1+50) , so I hope somebody here has some experience with this combination. I usually shoot 400ASA B&W at 200 and like the look I get with Trix in Rodinal 1+50. So gentlemen please let me know your preferred EI/dilution/time. Thanks in advance

Best regards

Peter

30 minutes is a lot, I develop Tura Pro400 11 minutes in Rodinal 1+50.

Hi,
I just bought a nice little birchwood box with the Rollei logo and 10 rolls of Retro400 in it...haven't tried the film yet, but I thought it was a rebadged Maco film, not APX400...
As per the soup to go with it, I was told that D76 will get you good results, and there's also a dedicated (two actually) Maco/Rollei developer.

30 minutes is about right for APX400 in Rodinal 1:50, and that's at EI 320, if I recall correctly. Development times that long fail my "life is too short" rule, so I either increase the concentration or the temperature, or both.

I just looked it up in the Rodinal instructions APX400 ist 30 minutes at 1+50.

I got some nearly expired Tura Pro 400 which is APX400 in disguise and in my case probably old APX400. So I looked up the times here and the indicated 11 minutes for 1+50 work just fine ;)

30 mins at 1:50 seems long to me at EI 320. I shoot 100 at rate and soup it for 17mins at 1:50 and no problems.... see my Daiichi thread at my site.

Here is why I thought 11 minutes in Rodinal 1+50 should be enough

This is Tura Pro 400 in Rodinal 1+50 11 minutes agitated twice every minute.
I must have gotten some of the old APX400 emulsion.

30 minutes is a BIG difference from 11 minutes. Massive development chart (http://www.digitaltruth.com/devchart.html) does not have data on Rollei film in Rodinal, but for Maco UP400p at 1:25 10 minutes is recommended.

That suggests it should be 20 minutes at 1+50. Till 1+80 it's almost linear proportion. My old note for East Germany ORWO NP-27 (27DIN/400ISO) says developing time is 13 min at 20C and 1+40 (manual processing). 30 min sounds too long for me, even for 400ISO emulsion. But maybe Rollei is somewhat different, I don't know.

Peter,
Here is what I would try.
Dilute Rodinal 1+25 to get a half of developer you need. If you have 350cc tank, make 175cc of 1+25 solution. Cut off 1-2cm of film from leader. Dive half of that piece into developer, wet part will become lighter and then darker. Measure time between when you dive the film into developer and when the wet part becomes equal or darker than dry half. Now divide that time in seconds by 5. Add 3 and you have developing time in minutes for particular emulsion in 1+25 Rodinal. Add water to get 1+50 dilution (if this is what you like) and develop twice as longer. Or at least you can see what the emulsion and processing time is close to from mentioned here.

Eduard.
