Round the World . . .Packing Challenge

ktm, if you're coming through Sydney, Australia, please put out an APB for us here. I'm sure we'd all love to meet you.
I am envious of your travelling, as others have said here.

Well, NZ is definitely on the list but am thinking it will not be until January due to the season reversal. I have been to Australia but over on the West coast at Perth. I just finished the Wikipedia article on Tasmania and it looks interesting so who knows.

I am presently looking for some type of exploratory trip to Papau New Guenea.

Bit of a tip about NZ: go directly down to Queenstown for the lakes and the Milford sound, there are a lot of spectacular hiking trails down there (e.g. the Routeburn), then rent a car and drive it up the west coast of the South Island (where there are plenty of other great hiking tracks). Reason why I suggest this is that almost everyone starts at the top of the island and drives down towards the south so the car rental companies are always looking for ways to get the cars back up the top of the island, they usually offer their cars (and camper vans) for free so long as you drop them off at Picton.

Oh, and tip #2 is not to leave the car in a place where there are Kea (giant mountain parrots, there are usually signs) while you hike, since they enjoy pulling cars apart and often rental car insurance won't cover parrot damage (really, this happens).

Update: Trip Terminated

Update: Trip Terminated

Well, I managed to spend two weeks in Hawaii and three weeks in the Philippines before being forced to return to the US for medical reasons.

I did everything I wanted to do in Hawaii and nothing I wanted to do in the Philippines. In fact, I did not take one photo in three weeks in the Philippines so let me explain.

About two days after arriving in Manila, Luzon was dead center for one of the largest typhoons in the last fifty years so many roads were washed out. Between the rain, I went out for a massage and the masseuse cracked a rib which I injured last summer. And at about the same time I started to come down with what I hope is influenza.

Now the cough is still going on. This year I have traveled to Guatemala in April and rode my motorcycle to Alaska. Upon returning home from each of these trips, I have had some kind of cough which needed treatment with antibiotics. So since the cough has not yet gone away, I am getting a CT scan next week.

Hopefully, it is just the remnants of influenza. My daughter and I had planned on meeting in Taiwan for the first two weeks of the new year. I am still planning on that trip so I will have to fly across the Pacific again.

As far as equipment even though I did not take any photos in the Philippines I found myself missing a film camera. So in January it looks like my M9 will be joined by an M2. The 35f2.8 C Biogon and 90f2.8 Tele Elmarit M will be joined by a brand new 50f2.8 Elmar M purchased today from Classic Connection. I am beginning to feel I can easily live with 35/50/90. And am thinking of selling the 15, 21 and 35f1.2.

I will update when I figure out what is going on medically. It sucks being sick.

Too bad about the illness, hopefully nothing serious, but at least you were able to get back home and get treatment.

Looking forward to more travel updates

Sorry to hear about your medical issues and hope you mend well.
On the plus side it sounds like a great dry run, and that you've nailed down the equipment side of things.
Thanks for the updates once again, I love it how you follow up your experiences for the benefit of all of us who might not get to travel as often.
