Seeing how helpful "kneedropper's" soundfile of "Voigtlander" was for me, I wonder if folks here are intereted in me uploading some sound files with correct pronunciation for Russian camera names, etc.

I put together a little site that hopefully can grow into something...so far it's just the .wav files of authentic Russian pronunciation!

Now, Gene, are you trying to roll that "r" in Zor" ? If you are, it needs to be like a Spanish-sounding "r" ....sorry, I am a linguist by education🙂

As a semi-lingual Canadian I was trying to pronounce the R as in 'au revoir' LOL

When i first time have seen a Fed, i was already puzzled how to read it 😀 (cyrillic version)

OK - i was more puzzled about how to load it.

Natalia - i think it would be interesting for a lot of folks here if you could do that.
 
Zenit ---- I'll stick my neck out ---- is pronounced Zye-NEET, da?
Also, Smena would be SMYE-nah, I believe. Help me out here, Natalie.

Natalia, I think it would be great to hear what ever you would like to share with us. This is getting cool. Not only are we learning about all this trivia about these cameras, but we will be able to walk around and speak of them as if we really know what we are talking about.
 
Y'all DO know what you are talking about, rover🙂 . I got about 12 sond files now. I wonder if I could upload them somewhere on this site (for reference purposes)......It would be great for all members to have a section where the native speakers give correct pronunciation.

Can I add Kiev (or however it's properly spelled), Jupiter, Helios, Mir and Salyut.. for now 🙂.

Can we also have it first the proper way, and then N'Awlins style 🙂.
 
As a retired Spanish teacher, I have to admit to more familiarity with the Latin-derived stuff. To me, Russian looks as hopeless as Greek! I've heard various things, such as there is no verb that accurately translates "to be".. That sounds pretty hard to get along without. But as a recent President said, "It all depends on your definition of 'is'".

As for the above-mentioned "r", that seems to get different treatment in different languages, even among the "Romance" languages. I understand Japanese has no "L", so they tend to hear something resembling "R". Russian supposedly has no "S", a "Zorki-C" is transposed as "Zorki-S".

To each his/her own set of phonemes!!
 
I like the rolled 'r' in Zorki!

By my favorite is definitely my request:
Ленинградское Оптико-Механическое Объединение (lomo).
