Russian leather: that distinctive smell

Are we sure the leather was ever on a cow? Or should the phrase "High Ho Silver!" be kept in mind?

I heard from a very knowledgeable guy that cow hide was tanned with ox urine in old Russia, He seemed quite serious. However, I find those leather cases and cameras smell much better than that You got in a Zoo.
